Synopsis
CRJ-550 flight crew reported the right hand side windshield on the First Officer's side cracked during arrival. The crew decided to continue to their destination.
Narrative
I was operating flight [FLT #] from ZZZ to ZZZ1. The FO was pilot flying and I was pilot monitoring. We blocked out the gate on time and during the departure and enroute was uneventful. However; as we getting close into the arrival to ZZZ1; I saw a RH windshield heat caution message illuminating on EICAS 1. As I pulled out the QRH to run the appropriate checklist; I noticed the RH side windshield on the FO side was cracked. Based on our observations; it seems that the crack was on the OUTER layers of the windshield which was associated to the RH windshield heat caution message. After completing the checklist for the RH windshield heat caution message; I then searching for the appropriate checklist for Windshield Cracked or damaged. Both myself and the FO could not locate it anywhere in the QRH or other manuals. However; I have had this event happened to me twice years ago; and I remember that there was once an appropriate checklist specifically for windshield crack. The checklist basically guides through series of steps and monitors if cabin pressurization is normal. So that what I did was monitoring and evaluating that the cabin pressurization and everything else was normal with no other abnormalities. We continue on the arrival into ZZZ1 and landed safely. After I blocked into the gate; I called dispatch and maintenance spoke with [NAME] about the situation and did the write up for that in log page [AML #].
Second reporter narrative
I was the First Officer and pilot flying on flight [FLT #] from ZZZ to ZZZ1 on [DATE]. Everything was normal from blocking out of the gate; departure; and enroute. As we were approaching the arrival into ZZZ1; we noticed a caution message on EICAS 1 for RH windshield heat. My Captain confirmed that I had the flight controls and radios; and he pulled out the QRH to run the appropriate checklist. We noticed the right side windshield was cracked; and determined it was the outer layer; that being responsible for the RH Windshield Heat Caution Message. My Captain completed the appropriate checklist for the RH Windshield Heat Caution Message; and moved on looking for a damaged or cracked windshield checklist. He mentioned he had experienced this event years ago and remembered there a checklist; but we both had trouble finding it. The checklist would guide us through steps to deal with cabin pressurization. We continuously monitored the cabin pressure and everything was normal. We were able to continue the flight as planned on the arrival into ZZZ1; and landed safely. Upon blocking in at the gate; my captain called dispatch to speak with maintenance about the situation; and wrote it up in the log. After returning home; my Captain reached out to a colleague to ask about the checklist. He let me know that it was under 'Ice and Rain Protection'. In flight; we both searched for windshield or window damage; but were unable to find it. We were able to immediately ensure there was no change in cabin pressure; address the caution message; and focus on the arrival into ZZZ1. After being able to spend time on the ground reviewing the abnormal checklists; I am aware of other abnormalities that can occur; and will know where to find the appropriate checklist in the future.
