Synopsis
Air carrier First Officer reported a go around due to unsafe gear indication followed by a return to the airport for a safe landing.
Narrative
While on the visual approach to runway XX and backed up with the ILS into ZZZ; autopilot/autothrust off; the PF requested gear down prior to the ZZZZZ FAF at 6700ft. PM moved the gear handle down and the usual three red transit lights came on. However by the time the gear should have been extended we received the Left Gear not downlocked ECAM. The ECAM directed us to recycle the gear which the PM did while the PF continued the descent on GS at flaps 3. Once the recycling did not yield a gear down locked indication either we conducted a go around. Obviously with no attempt to raise the gear. Tower instructions were to climb to 9000ft and a heading of 150deg. PF requested 200kts followed by 210kts to stay above green dot with flaps retracted. After go around we entered cruise for the airport vicinity and the PF engaged the autopilot to free up capacity. The PM coordinated with ATC about requesting priority handling; type of malfunction; intentions for new approach; delay vectors and SOB/ FOB questions later with tower. PM advised flight attendants and passengers of the situation. The crew determined the safer option to land in ZZZ over returning to ZZZ1 since fuel consumption might be reduced with landing gear doors open and left gear possibly exposed. Also the weather in ZZZ1 was moderate turbulence below FL180. The ILS XX was loaded in the FMGC; and we received vectors to the visual final again. Prior to the ZZZZZ FAF we used the manual gear extension as directed by the ECAM. The gear extended with the three green indication and no further ECAM to the contrary. All checklists were completed and crew discussed touchdown and rollout. Since we knew that the procedure inhibited nose wheel steering after landing as per ECAM the PM had already advised ATC of possibly needing to be towed from the runway. Emergency vehicles were standing by. PF was to decelerate to a safe taxi speed on the runway before transferring controls to the Captain. After an uneventful landing and roll out; the Captain took flight controls and managed to taxi the airplane off the runway onto the parallel Taxiway 1 heading towards the ramp. By that time; operations in ZZZ acknowledged our request for a tow in from Taxiway 1 short of Taxiway 2. After completing all necessary flows and tow in checklists we started the APU and shut down all engines. No further issues occurred while getting towed to Gate XX with regular egress for passengers. Crew finished all applicable checklists and concluded the termination checklist after talking to operations.
