Synopsis

CRJ550 First Officer reported a loss of the FMS system during climb. Crew returned to departure airport.

Narrative

XA:30. ZZZ-ZZZZ.The Aircraft had an MEL for the ACARS but it was briefed between I and the Captain. As I filled out the FMS; I realized that the ACARS worked fine besides getting a manual weight and balance and having to check in with in and out times. As we departed ZZZ; everything seemed normal. As we were approaching FL180; I noticed that our route of flight disappeared and a red line crossed through the active FMS on my PFD (Primary Flight Display) when the Autopilot was armed. I told the Captain and after troubleshooting We decided it was to best to return to ZZZ especially considering the closest VOR to our route ZZZ1 which was 250 miles away. We went through all diversion and other required checklists per SOP and informed the FA (Flight Attendant) as well as the passengers. We requested radar vectors for the ILS in ZZZ and ATC told us which runway to which we requested XXC. We did not have any issues maintaining Contact with ATC and we had our ARINC Frequency on as well. We did not request priority handling since our green needles were operating. We set up for the approach and landed and got assigned XX as the gate. Once there Captain spoke to Dispatch and Maintenance as we verified we were below landing weight since we only had XX passengers. I set up the new aircraft to go back to ZZZZ and we completed the flight.
