Synopsis
Air carrier Captain reported an engine compressor vane ECAM message on takeoff. Flight crew aborted takeoff and returned to gate.
Narrative
From a static position on runway XXR at ZZZ we were cleared for takeoff. The FO was the pilot flying and began the takeoff roll. After the FO placed the thrust levers in the FLX/MCT detent and after the airspeed alive callout but prior to the 80kt callout; we received a single chime and a ENG1 (Engine) COMPRESSOR VANE ECAM message. In accordance with company rejected takeoff policy I rejected the take-off. We stopped the aircraft on the runway and completed our manual RTO (Rejected Takeoff) procedures. I announced; 'remain seated' and taxied clear of the runway. We completed the ECAM/QRH procedures and coordinated a gate return. I made a PA to the cabin and informed them that during the takeoff roll we received an indication of a possible problem with the left engine. I told them that I elected to stop the takeoff to avoid any chance of taking a bad engine into the air. We returned to the gate where I told the passengers they would receive more information regarding their flight to ZZZ1. While departing the aircraft the passengers seemed to appreciate the decision to stop.
