SPD RESTR NOT COMPLIED WITH AT 5000 FT.
Narrative
THINKING WE HAD IT ALL UNDER CTL AGAIN; WE BLASTED OFF WITH A CLRNC TO CLB TO 5000 FT. WE HAD THE FMC SET FOR 210 KTS/3670; 250 KTS TO 10000 FT; VNAV AND LNAV WERE ENGAGED AND THE CAPT WAS HAND FLYING WITH THE FLT DIRECTOR. WE WERE APCHING 5000 FT; CLBING AT 250 KTS; WHEN THE BIG GUY UPSTAIRS GAVE US ONE MORE LESSON TO REINFORCE HIS POINT. AS THE CAPT STARTED TO LEVEL OFF; THE AUTO THROTTLES DID NOT COME BACK. THEY ARE SOMETIMES SLOW; BUT BY NOW THE SPD WAS BUILDING. I POINTED THIS OUT TO THE CAPT; WHO COMMANDED FLCH-250. THIS ALTERNATE MODE DID NOT WORK EITHER; AND SINCE THE SPD WAS NOW OVER 270 KTS (AT 5000 FT); AND THE AIRSPD BUG STAYED AT 250 KTS THROUGHOUT THE INCIDENT; I MANUALLY RETARDED THE THROTTLES. THE AUTO THROTTLES WERE STILL FIGHTING ME; SO I CLICKED THEM OFF. I CONCENTRATED ON GETTING THE SPD BACK BELOW 250 KTS; WHILE THE CAPT CONCENTRATED ON COMPLETING THE LEVELOFF AT THE PROPER ALT; XCHKING EACH OTHER. THIS PROC WORKED FINE; BUT IT'S AMAZING HOW FAST A MID-WT B-757 WILL ACCELERATE AT LOW ALT WITH CLB THRUST! LESSON: BE ALERT! WE NEED MORE 'LERTS.
