Synopsis

LGT DEVIATES FROM SID IN PROCESS OF AVOIDING TFC.

Narrative

DEPARTED ONTARIO; CA; OUTBOUND ON THE 130 DEG RADIAL FROM PDZ FLYING THE PRADO 3 DEP; APPROX 10-12 MI SE OF PDZ; LEVEL AT 6000 FT. ATC ADVISED TFC AT 12 O'CLOCK WITH UNCONFIRMED ALT READOUT OF 7200 FT. DEP THEN ADVISED US THAT THEY LOST THE ALT READOUT. WE HAD VISUAL CONTACT WITH TFC; ESTIMATED ALT 7000 FT; AND ADVISED ATC. ATC THEN ADVISED US TO MAINTAIN VISUAL SEPARATION AND CLB TO 7000 FT. SHORTLY THEREAFTER WE NOTICED A SECOND ACFT (A BI-WING); FORWARD OF THE FIRST ACFT AND DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF US. WE HAD ALREADY STOPPED OUR CLB AND TURNED TO AVOID THE FIRST ACFT AND TO KEEP HIM AT A COMFORTABLE DISTANCE WHEN WE HAD TO CONTINUE TO MANEUVER AROUND THE SECOND ACFT. ONE OF THE ACFT TRIGGERED A TCASII RA WITH A COMMAND TO DSND. WE ADVISED CTR OF THE SECOND ACFT. BY TAKING THIS EVASIVE ACTION OUR ATTN WAS DIVERTED FROM KEEPING THE ACFT ON THE SID. AS WE STARTED OUR TURN TO REINTERCEPT THE 263 DEG RADIAL FROM TRM; ATC ADVISED US THAT WE HAD MISSED THE TURN BY APPROX 6 MI. IN CLOSING; I DON'T THINK VISUAL CLB CLRNCS SHOULD BE ISSUED BTWN JETS AND SINGLE ENG AIRPLANES SINCE CLOSURE RATES ARE DIFFICULT TO JUDGE.
