INFLT ENG SHUTDOWN IN A NIGHT OP. NEW EQUIP.
Narrative
ACFT WAS IN CRUISE AT FL290 DUE TO THE PRIOR SHUTTING DOWN OF THE #2 PACK FOR OVERHEAD. WE WERE JUST PREPARING TO DSND TO CROSS BRADFORD INTXN AT FL240. WHEN WE HEARD A POSSIBLE COMPRESSOR STALL AND THE ACFT SHOOK AND YAWED. WE GOT CONFIRMATION OF THE #2 ENG FAILURE IN THE ELECTRONIC CTLED ACFT MONITORING (ECAM) SYS. ECAM PROCS WERE FOLLOWED. THE FO WAS FLYING AND I ALLOWED HIM TO CONTINUE TO DO SO. I DID NOT ELECT TO DO A RESTART AS THE EGT WAS CLBING RAPIDLY. I SHUT DOWN THE ENG ACCORDING TO ECAM AND USED THE FIRE BOTTLE DUE TO HIGH AND RISING EGT. STARTED APU; DECLARED EMER WITH ATC; NOTIFIED DISPATCH; MADE PA ANNOUNCEMENT TO PAX; SUBSEQUENTLY LOST APU BEFORE LNDG; WOULDN'T RESTART. ELECTED NOT TO PREPARE CABIN FOR EVAC AND WX WAS VFR. LANDED WITHOUT INCIDENT AT CHICAGO AND TAXIED BACK TO GATE AS ALL HYD SYS WERE OPERATING NORMALLY. THE #2 ENG COMPRESSOR SECTION HAD FAILED COMPLETELY AND BROKEN UP; N; WAS FROZEN. THE ENG WAS REPLACED BY MAINT. I WAS FORTUNATE TO HAVE ALONG A VERY COMPETENT FO; AND ALTHOUGH I HAD ONLY BEEN ON THE ACFT A MONTH; TRAINING HAD PREPARED ME VERY WELL TO HANDLE THE PROB.
