Synopsis

ENG FIRE INDICATION. RETURN LAND.

Narrative

DURING CLBOUT; COCKPIT WARNING DEVICES INDICATED THE PRESENCE OF A FIRE IN THE #3 ENG. CAPT INSTRUCTED THE FO TO CONTINUE FLYING. I THEN COMPLETED THE ENG FIRE CHKLIST WITH THE CAPT. UPON COMPLETION; THE COCKPIT WARNING DEVICES NO LONGER INDICATED THE PRESENCE OF A FIRE. I ALSO COMPLETED THE 1 ENG INOP FOLLOW-UP CHKLIST WITH THE CAPT. FO MANEUVERED THE ACFT FOR A L BASE LEG FOR RWY 16L. CAPT TOOK CTL OF THE ACFT. THE ACFT WAS CONFIGURED FOR A FLAPS 30 DEGS LNDG. TOUCHDOWN WAS ACCOMPLISHED ON SPD APPROX 1000 FT FROM THE APCH END OF THE RWY. GND SPOILERS DEPLOYED ON TOUCHDOWN. CAPT APPLIED REVERSE THRUST TO THE #1 AND #2 ENGS. AS THE ACFT SLOWED TO APPROX 100 KIAS; CAPT APPLIED WHEEL BRAKING. THE ACFT CONTINUED ON A NORMAL ROLLOUT ON THE CTRLINE OF THE RWY. TWR ADVISED THAT TXWY C WAS BLOCKED. WE WERE INSTRUCTED TO STOP ON THE RWY IN ORDER TO ALLOW THE EMER CREWS TO INSPECT THE ACFT. THE ACFT CAME TO A STOP APPROX 1000 FT FROM THE DEP END OF THE RWY. AFTER APPROX 15 MINS; TWR ADVISED THAT THE EMER CREW HAD RPTED THAT #3 ENG APPEARED NORMAL. TWR CLRED US TO MAKE A 180 DEG TURN ON THE RWY TO TAXI BACK TO THE GATE. WE APPLIED PWR TO THE #1 AND #2 ENGS. THE ACFT DID NOT MOVE. CAPT ASKED THE TWR IF THERE WERE CHOCKS UNDER OUR WHEELS. TWR CAME BACK AND SAID NO. WE APPLIED PWR AGAIN. AGAIN; THE ACFT WOULD NOT MOVE. WE ADVISED THE TWR THAT WE COULD NOT TAXI. WE REQUESTED A MECH AND CONTACTED THE ACR MAINT COORDINATOR. THE MAINT COORDINATOR ADVISED THAT THE ACFT SHOULD NOT BE TOWED BECAUSE OF THE RISK OF DAMAGE TO THE NOSE GEAR. THE ACFT STAYED ON THE RWY FOR APPROX 5 HRS. THE PROCS EMPLOYED WERE APPROVED BY THE MAINT COORDINATOR AND CARRIED OUT BY THE CONTRACT MECH AT RNO.
