ENG FAILURE ON TKOF.
Narrative
DEPARTING SFO FROM RWY 1R; DURING INITIAL CLBOUT; EXPERIENCED AN ENG FAILURE OF THE L ENG. THE ACFT WAS ACCELERATING DURING THE CLEAN-UP PROCESS WITH THE GEAR UP AND FLAPS 1 DEG. A LOUD BANG WAS HEARD FOLLOWED BY A SLIGHT VIBRATION IN THE ACFT AND THEN THE LOSS OF PWR ON THE L ENG. THE L ENG EGT THEN STARTED TO CLB (RISE) RAPIDLY. BOTH PLTS ACKNOWLEDGED EGT RISE AND THE L ENG CUTOFF SWITCH WAS PLACED TO THE 'OFF' POS. WE DECLARED AN EMER DUE TO AN ENG FAILURE WITH SFO BAY DEP CTL AND WERE GIVEN A HDG AND ALT FOR A DOWNWIND LNDG RWY 28R SFO. THE FO CONTINUED TO FLY THE ACFT WHILE I COMPLETED THE ENG FAILURE CHKLIST. THE LEAD FLT ATTENDANT CAME FORWARD AND QUICKLY BRIEFED HER TO PREPARE THE CABIN FOR A LNDG IN APPROX 6-7 MINS. WE WERE VECTORED FOR A 10-15 MI FINAL FOR RWY 28R SFO AND CLRED FOR THE ILS. WE CONFIRMED AND REQUESTED THE EMER EQUIP STANDING BY AS A PRECAUTION. LNDG WAS ACCOMPLISHED WITH NO FURTHER COMPLICATIONS AND THE RWY WAS CLRED FOR THE ACFT TO BE INSPECTED BY THE EMER PERSONNEL. AFTER ACKNOWLEDGEMENT ALL WAS SAFE; WE PROCEEDED TO THE GATE. UPON INSPECTION AT THE GATE; IT WAS INITIALLY DETERMINED AS A SELF-CONTAINED FAILURE OF THE TURBINE SECTION OF THE ENG WITH SOME WARPING OF THE OUTER COWL.
