Narrative

THE FLT ASSOCIATED WITH THIS EVENT WAS A CERTIFICATION FLT INVOLVING THE BOEING 777. IT WAS THE 3RD FLT OF THE DAY AND CONSISTED OF A FERRY FLT FROM KGSG TO KBFI COMBINED WITH AN NOISE AND VIBRATION SURVEY. THE EVENT OCCURRED DURING DEP AND CLB FROM KGSG. THE FILED RTE WAS DIRECT JDN (APPROX 60 NM S OF THE GLASGOW VOR); DIRECT GTF; DIRECT MLP; DIRECT EPH; DIRECT KBFI. WHEN VFR CONDITIONS EXIST; IT IS COMMON TO DEPART KGSG VFR AND CALL ZLC CLBING VFR TOWARD JDN. FOR THIS FLT I WAS PIC FLYING IN THE L SEAT. THE TKOF WAS NORMAL AND; AS WE CLBED THROUGH APPROX 10000 FT; THE COPLT CALLED ZLC AND REQUESTED OUR IFR CLRNC TO KBFI. A FEW MOMENTS LATER THE COPLT SAID WE WERE CLRED TO CONTINUE CLB TO FL350. AT THIS TIME I TURNED AND PROCEEDED DIRECT TO GTF. A FEW MIN LATER CTR CALLED AND ASKED IF WE WERE PROCEEDING DIRECT GTF. AT THIS TIME I REALIZED THAT WE HAD NOT BEEN CLRED DIRECT GTF. FORTUNATELY; THERE WAS NO CONFLICT AND WE REMAINED ON COURSE TO GTF. I CAN THINK OF 3 CONTRIBUTING FACTORS TO THIS EVENT: 1) DURING THE PRIOR FLT; I HAD JUST FLOWN 21 ILS APCHS FOR CERTIFICATION OF THE 777 AUTOMATIC LNDG SYS; AND I WAS TIRED: 2) I WAS COMMUNICATING WITH THE TEST DIRECTOR AS THE COPLT RECEIVED THE CLRNC (THIS HAPPENS FREQUENTLY DURING TEST FLTS.) 3) THE COPLT WAS NOT FAMILIAR WITH THE DEP PROC AND DID NOT QUESTION MY ACTIONS WHEN I INCORRECTLY TURNED TOWARD GTF.
