NMAC - TCASII ON APCH.

Narrative

TURNING FINAL FOR RWY 34 AT SLC; TWR DID NOT NOTIFY OUR FLT OF TFC ABOVE US FOR A PARALLEL RWY. ON FINAL TCASII INDICATED TFC DIRECTLY ABOVE US 200 FT HIGHER THAN US AND COMMANDED A CLB TCASII RA FOLLOWED BY A DSCNT TCASII RA. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR STATES THAT THE ACFT; A B727-200 WAS AT ABOUT 6000 FT ON THE APCH TO RWY 34 AT SLC WHEN THE TCASII SOUNDED A 'TA.' HE AND THE SO MONITORED THE TCASII DISPLAY WHILE ATTEMPTING TO VISUALLY ACQUIRE THE TFC. JUST AS THEY SAW THE ACFT ABOVE THEM THE TCASII SOUNDED AN 'RA' TO CLB. THE CAPT STARTED TO FOLLOW THE CLB COMMAND AND THE FO AND THE SO STOPPED HIM JUST AS THE 'RA' CHANGED TO A DSND COMMAND. THE CAPT TALKED TO THE TWR SUPVR WHO ADMITTED OPERATOR ERROR FOR TURNING THE METROLINER IN TOWARD RWY 35 ACROSS THE B727'S PATH. THESE RWYS ARE CTLED USING 2 DIFFERENT FREQS SO THE PARALLEL TFC MAY NOT BE AWARE OF EACH OTHER UNLESS THEY ARE ADVISED BY THE CTLRS. THE B727 CREW WAS NOT ADVISED IN THIS CASE.
