ACFT EQUIP PROB -- THIS RPT CONCERNS AN ACRS PROBS OVER SEVERAL FLTS ENDING WITH A WHEEL WELL FIRE INDICATION.
Narrative
AFTER TKOF LGA LNDG GEAR HANDLE WOULD NOT GO TO UP POS. PER ACFT OPS MANUAL CONSTANT SPD DRIVE OIL COOLER SHIFT TO NORMAL FOLLOWED BY TRIGGER OVERRIDE AND NORMAL RETRACTIONS AND EXTENSIONS (2 AND 3 EACH). PER COMPANY TECH SVCS; NO FURTHER ACTION REQUIRED. ON GND AT BUF; NOTICED TAIL SKID LIGHT ON MOMENTARILY. TOOK NO ACTION EXCEPT TO EXAMINE VISUALLY (FE); APPEARED NORMAL. BUF-ACY NORMAL. ACY-LGA; 5000 FT CRUISE; EXPERIENCED WHEEL WELL FIRE WARNING. COMPLIED WITH ACFT OPS MANUAL PROCS; WARNING CEASED IMMEDIATELY. PROCEEDED TO LGA WITH GEAR EXTENDED AND REQUESTED LGA CRASH CREW CHK FOR FIRE. NONE FOUND; TAXIED TO GATE. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THIS FLC WAS FLYING A B727- 200 THAT HAD BEEN IN THE MAINT BAY OVER NIGHT. DURING THAT TIME THE MECHS HAD LUBRICATED THE GEAR; FLAPS AND OTHER PARTS OF THE ACFT. WHILE ENGAGED IN THIS ACTIVITY SOMEONE APPARENTLY ACTIVATED THE AIR-GND SENSOR SWITCH SO THAT IT GOT OUT OF SEQUENCE. THE CAPT SAID THAT WAS THE CAUSE OF THE GEAR AND THE TAILSKID MALFUNCTIONS. THE WHEEL WELL FIRE INDICATION WAS ANOTHER MATTER. THE CAPT SAID THAT WHEN THEY LANDED AT ACY IT WAS VERY HOT AND THE TURN AROUND WAS VERY QUICK AND THE INBOUND AND OUTBOUND LOADS WERE VERY HVY. THE DEP WAS ABOUT 20 MINS AFTER THE LNDG AND THIS WAS AT ABOUT THE PEAK TEMP BUILDUP TIME FROM THE LNDG EFFECT. THAT EFFECT PLUS THE TEMP BUILDUP FROM THE TKOF AND THE LOW ALT CRUISE (WARM AIR) CAUSED ENOUGH OF A TEMP RISE IN THE GEAR TO ACTIVATE THE WHEEL WELL TEMP SENSORS SETTING OFF THE WARNING. THE CAPT SAID THAT AS SOON AS THE GEAR LOWERED THE FIRE WARNING CEASED AND THERE WAS NO DAMAGE TO THE ACFT.
