WHILE PARKING B757 WITH WING WALKERS AND MARSHALLER; WINGTIP CONTACTED ANOTHER B757 PARKED INCORRECTLY AT ADJACENT GATE. GND PERSONNEL SAY THAT 2 B757'S ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO BE PARKED ADJACENT AT THOSE GATES.

Narrative

I WAS THE CAPT ON FLT MAR/XX/96. WE WERE ASSIGNED TO GATE B IN ATL. GND CTL CLRED ME TO THE RAMP ON TXWY F. OUR RAMP CTL CLRED ME INTO THE L SIDE OF RAMP TO PARK AT GATE B. AS I TURNED TOWARD THE GATE; I HAD A GREEN LIGHT ON THE LIGHT SYS; A WING WALKER ON THE L AND R; AN AGENT WORKING THE LIGHT AND A FOURTH RAMP AGENT AT THE STOP POINT WITH A CHOCK. AT GATE A THERE WAS ANOTHER B757 PARKED AND AN MD88 PUSHING FROM GATE C. I PARKED THE ACFT FOLLOWING THE LIGHT SIGNALS WHICH WERE NORMAL (GREEN; A BRIEF YELLOW TELLING ME I WAS NEAR THE STOP POINT; THEN A RED TO STOP). AS THE PAX WERE GETTING OFF; A MECH CAME ON THE ACFT AND TOLD ME WE HAD DAMAGED A WINGTIP; OUR FIRST INDICATION ANYTHING HAPPENED. AFTER THE PAX WERE OFF; I WENT DOWN ON THE RAMP. OUR L WINGTIP WAS TOUCHING THE R WINGTIP OF THE B757 AT GATE A. THE RAMP SUPVR TOLD ME THERE WAS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE B757'S AT GATE A AND GATE B. WE WERE SCHEDULED TO PARK AT GATE B ON OUR FLT PLAN AND ON OUR IN-RANGE RPT. I DON'T KNOW WHERE THE OTHER B757 WAS ORIGINALLY SCHEDULED TO PARK. WHILE I WAS ON THE RAMP; THE OPS SUPVR ASKED ME IF I HAD RECEIVED ANY HOLD OR STOP SIGNAL AND I TOLD HIM NOT UNTIL THE RED LIGHT TO STOP TO PARK. I THEN WENT TO THE NOSEWHEEL TO SEE IF I WAS ON THE GATE CTRLINE AND I WAS. I WOULD THINK RAMP CTL WOULD KNOW 2 B757'S CAN'T BE PARKED AT THESE 2 GATES. I DON'T KNOW WHY A WING WALKER DIDN'T GIVE THE LIGHT MAN A STOP SIGNAL WHEN HE SAW THE WINGTIPS WOULD TOUCH. THIS INCIDENT WAS PREVENTABLE AND SHOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED. THERE WERE PLENTY OF GND PERSONNEL MARSHALLING US TO THE GATE; SOMEONE WAS NOT PAYING ATTN TO BUSINESS. I WAS TOLD THE SAME THING HAPPENED ABOUT 3 MONTHS AGO AT THESE GATES WHICH REALLY MAKES ME WONDER WHY 2 B757'S WERE AGAIN PARKED AT GATE A AND GATE B.
