ACFT EQUIP PROB. NOSE GEAR ACTUATOR FAILED TAKING OUT THE 'A' SYS HYD SYS. NOSE GEAR LOWERED MANUALLY AND UNEVENTFUL LNDG FOLLOWED.

Narrative

ON MAY/XX/96; WHILE CONDUCTING THE VISUAL APCH TO RWY 17 AT ABQ INTL THE NOSE GEAR ACTUATOR FAILED WHEN THE GEAR WAS LOWERED FOR LNDG; RESULTING IN A LOSS OF 'A' SYS HYD FLUID. THE MAIN GEAR EXTENDED AND LOCKED INTO POS AND THE FLAPS EXTENDED TO 25 DEGS PRIOR TO THE TOTAL LOSS OF 'A' SYS FLUID. WE ADVISED ABQ TWR THAT WE WERE GOING AROUND; DECLARING AN EMER; AND REQUESTED VISUAL VERIFICATION THAT THE NOSE GEAR FAILED TO EXTEND. ABQ TWR VERIFIED THE NOSE GEAR WAS STILL RETRACTED; ASSIGNED US A HDG OF 170 DEGS AT 8000 FT MSL. THE CAPT TURNED ACFT FLYING DUTIES AND ATC COM OVER TO ME; WHILE HE WORKED WITH THE SO ON THE HYD FLUID/SYS LOSS CHKLIST AND COORDINATED WITH THE FLT ATTENDANTS IN PREPARING THE CABIN FOR AN EMER LNDG. DURING EXECUTION OF THE HYD FLUID/SYS LOSS CHKLIST THE NOSE GEAR WAS MANUALLY EXTENDED SUCCESSFULLY AND WE CONDUCTED A FLAPS 15 DEGS LNDG TO RWY 21. THE CAPT WAS ABLE TO EXIT THE RWY USING DIFFERENTIAL BRAKING. ONCE CLR; WE STOPPED AND THE FIRE CREW INSPECTED THE ACFT. SINCE THE HYD LEAK WAS IN THE NOSEWHEEL WELL; WE ELECTED TO START THE APU AND SHUT DOWN THE ENGS. THE GEAR PINS WERE INSTALLED AND WE WERE TOWED TO THE GATE WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT.
