AN ACR FLC HAS THE R MAIN GO OFF OF THE HARD SURFACE AND SINK INTO THE MUD AT THE INTXN OF TXWYS G AND A AT PIE. THE ACFT WAS TOWED OUT AND THE R MAIN TIRES AND BRAKES WERE LATER CHANGED AND THE ACFT RETURNED TO SVC. B757-200.

Narrative

WHILE ACTING AS FO ON A FLT FROM MDW TO PIE; ON OCT/WED/96; WE EXPERIENCED A TAXI INCIDENT THAT RENDERED THE ACFT INCAPABLE OF FURTHER MOVEMENT. AFTER COMPLETION OF LNDG ROLLOUT ON RWY 17L; WE CONFIRMED WITH TWR THAT TXWY G WAS AUTH FOR USE; AND EXITED THE RWY AT THAT POINT. AFTER RADIO CONTACT WITH GND CTL; WE COMPLETED THE AFTER LNDG CHKLIST. THE TAXI PROCEEDED AT A SLOW PACE; AND A SLOW R-HAND TURN WAS INITIATED BY THE CAPT ONTO TXWY A. AFTER ENSURING THAT TXWY A CTRLINE HAD PASSED BEHIND THE THIRD WINDOW ON THE R; THE TURN WAS INITIATED. SHORTLY THEREAFTER; WE FELT A SINKING SENSATION AND A GRADUAL STOP. WE REALIZED THAT THE R MAIN LNDG GEAR HAD LEFT THE PAVEMENT ONTO AN UNPREPARED SURFACE. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS/SUGGESTIONS: NO PAINTED TAXI LINE FOR R TURNS FROM TXWY G TO TXWY A. NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED AT PIE ARPT. WIDER TURNING PAD FROM TXWY G TO TXWY A TURNING R DUE TO APPROX 120 DEG TURN. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR SAID THAT THE RAMP HAD AN FBO OP IN THIS AREA WITH NUMEROUS LIGHT ACFT PARKED NEAR THE TXWYS AND THIS WAS A FACTOR IN THE FLC ATTEMPTING TO TURN CLOSE TO THE EDGE OF THE HARD SURFACE. THERE WAS ALSO A GND SVC 'STAIR' TRUCK PARKED NEXT TO THE TXWY NEAR INTXN; HE SAID. AFTER THE R MAIN SANK INTO THE MUD THE MAINT PERSONNEL PUT STRAPS AROUND BOTH MAIN GEAR STRUTS AND TOWED THE ACFT OUT. THEY CHANGED THE R MAIN TIRES AND BRAKES AND TEST FLEW THE ACFT AND RETURNED IT TO THE LINE. THE RPTR RECOMMENDED THAT THE LINE OF ACFT NEAREST TO THE TXWY BE MOVED; A TXWY CTRLINE BE PAINTED ON TXWY A; AND THE INTXN WHERE TXWY G JOINS TXWY A BE ROUNDED BY SURFACING THE INSIDE OF THAT SHARP TURN.
