Narrative
TAXIING FROM OUR GATE TO RWY 28L. WE RECEIVED CLRNC TO TAXI TO RWY 28L. AS WE APCHED THE RWY; TWR TOLD US WE WERE WELL BEYOND THE HOLD SHORT LINE. (WE WERE ON RWY 23; WHICH WAS CLOSED.) IN THE DARKNESS NONE OF US HAD SEEN THE HOLD SHORT LINES; WHICH WERE ON TXWY D. IN THE PROCESS OF DOING OUR CHKLIST AND PREPARING FOR TKOF THE HOLD SHORT LINES WERE NOT VERY OBVIOUS TO US ESPECIALLY AT NIGHT. IT MIGHT BE A GOOD IDEA TO HAVE THE HOLD SHORT LINES LIT UP TO HELP MAKE AWARE OF THEIR LOCATION. ATC SAID IT HAPPENS QUITE REGULARLY. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 354082: THE TWR INFORMED US THAT WE HAD PASSED THE LINE AND HE HAD LNDG TFC 5 MI OUT. TWR ASKED US IF WE WERE READY AND WE WERE CLRED FOR TKOF. I CALLED THE TWR SUPVR AFTER REACHING OUR DEST AND HE INFORMED ME THAT THIS (PASSING HOLD SHORT LINE) OCCURS EVERY COUPLE OF WKS. HE ALSO STATED THAT I SHOULD PASS THIS ALONG TO THE PORT OF CMH OR OUR COMPANY TO IMPROVE THE LIGHTING SIT. IT IS QUITE DARK ON THE E END OF TXWY D AND DIFFICULT TO FIND YOUR WAY. A STOP BAR OR LIGHT SHOULD BE ADDED TO IMPROVE NIGHTTIME OPS. THE FO AND I WERE LOOKING QUITE HARD FOR THE STOP LINE AND WERE SURPRISED THAT WE HAD CROSSED IT. WE ACTUALLY STOPPED ON RWY 23 WHICH WAS NOT LIGHTED. I BELIEVE THE HOLD SHORT MARKINGS ARE AN ANGULAR LINE. I SIMPLY SHOULD HAVE STOPPED AT THE RWY 28L RED LIGHT. I THINK SOME IMPROVEMENTS COULD BE MADE IN SIGNAGE OR LIGHTING AT CMH. CMH HAS HAD TXWY CHANGES IN THIS AREA WITHIN THE PAST YR. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR OF ACN 354085 REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR SAID THAT ALL 3 MEMBERS OF THIS B727-200 FLC WERE LOOKING FOR THE HOLD LINE WHEN THEY CROSSED IT. HE SAID THAT THE LIGHTING IS BAD AND THE LINE IS AT AN ANGLE TO THE TXWY AND THIS IS A VERY WIDE AREA WITH SEVERAL TAXI LINES RUNNING TOWARD RWY 23 AND RWY 28L. THE FLC ENDED UP ON RWY 23.
