EXCURSION FROM TXWY ON A DARK AND RAINY NIGHT OP. PIC FAILED TO COMPREHEND THE TAXI INSTRUCTIONS AND WENT OFF A NARROW TXWY INTO THE MUD.

Narrative

AFTER STARTING ENGS AND HAVING PERFORMED THE CHKLIST; I SWITCHED FROM INTERPHONE FOR GND COMS TO VHF 1 TO HEAR THE TAXI CLRNC. AT THAT POINT I HEARD 'JOIN TXWY EA TO RWY 28R.' I WAS DIRECTED BY THE MARSHALLER TOWARDS TXWY F1 TO JOIN TXWY E; HAVING IN MIND THAT TXWY F IS CLOSED BY THE PLAIN VIEW CHART 10-9 OF GENERAL MITCHELL; MILWAUKEE; TO ACFT WITH WTS HIGHER THAN 79000 LBS. PROCEEDED NORMALLY AND ON THE FIRST L TURN THE L MAIN GEAR GOT STUCK IN THE MUD. THE CONDITIONS AT THE MOMENT WERE 4450 FT VISIBILITY AND LIGHT RAIN AT NIGHT. TXWY F1 HAS NO SHOULDERS AND FROM THE TAXI LIGHTS TO THE PAVEMENT IS APPROX 10 FT TO EACH SIDE. ALSO A TAXI LIGHT WAS BURNT OUT ON THE CURVE. THERE WERE NO INDICATIONS THAT TXWY E WAS NOT SUITABLE FOR B727'S. AFTER THE FACT MY FO INFORMED ME THAT THE CLRNC WAS 'TXWY F JOIN TXWY A TO RWY 28R.' IF IT WAS SO; I DID NOT HEAR IT THAT WAY AND HE NEVER ADVISED ME DIFFERENTLY. I CALLED GND AND INFORMED THEM OF THE PROB AND ADVISED MY COMPANY OF THE SIT. ON INSPECTION OF THE ACFT; NO DAMAGE WAS FOUND.
