A DEP RADAR CTLR PROVIDING INSTRUCTION TO A TRAINEE BECAME DISTR WITH INTERFAC COORD AND MISSED THE TRAINEE ASSIGNING A WRONG ALT TO A B757. THE B757 CLBED THROUGH AN OCCUPIED ALT.

Narrative

APPROX XX00; N WIND; MCO DEPARTING N; FEW CLOUDS BTWN 6000-8000 FT. I WAS OJT INSTRUCTOR. I WAS TRAINING ON DEP E RADAR POS. NGA Y; 7000 FT; WAS HANDED OFF FROM DEP W RADAR TO ME HDG 090 DEGS. ACR X DEPARTED MCO NBOUND; WAS ASSIGNED 8000 FT. THE 2 ACFT CONFLICTED IN THE VICINITY OF THE ORL VOR. MY TRAINEE ACCEPTED THE HDOF ON ACR X HEADED EBOUND AT 7000 FT. AN MCO DEP PRIOR TO ACR X WAS ASSIGNED 6000 FT FOR SEPARATION. ACR X DEPARTED WHILE COF APCH WAS CALLING THE DR-E POS. I ANSWERED COF APCH USING A HAND-HELD RECEIVER. I INCORRECTLY AND UNFORTUNATELY ASSUMED THAT MY TRAINER WOULD ASSIGN ACR X 6000 FT; SINCE HE WAS AWARE OF THE POTENTIAL CONFLICTION. I MISSED THE 8000 FT ALT ASSIGNMENT WHILE ON THE COORD LINE. MY TRAINEE HAD BEEN XFERRED FROM A LEVEL 1 FACILITY AND HAD NO RADAR EXPERIENCE. WAS PROGRESSING AT MCO VERY SLOWLY AND IN MY OPINION SHOULD NOT BE AT A FACILITY WITH THIS TFC DENSITY WITHOUT MORE EXPERIENCE. ALTHOUGH I AM ULTIMATELY RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS SIT; I FEEL SOME RESENTMENT FOR BEING PLACED IN A POS THAT DAILY PUTS MY CAREER AND REPUTATION ON THE LINE. I REALIZE NOW OF COURSE THAT I SHOULD NOT HAVE ANSWERED THE LANDLINE BUT WAS TRYING TO MAKE THE POS OPERATE AS IT SHOULD. THIS IS MY FIRST RPTED OPERROR IN 16 YRS AT MCO AND CAN TRUTHFULLY SAY I HAVE NEVER MADE SUCH AN OBVIOUS; CARELESS LACK OF CTL JUDGEMENT CALL.
