CAPT BELIEVES THAT MORE INFO ABOUT WIDTHS OF CONVERGING TAXI AREAS BE SHOWN ON ARPT DIAGRAMS.

FLC OF A B757 STOPPED TAXIING BECAUSE THEY DID NOT BELIEVE THAT THERE WAS SUFFICIENT WING CLRNC WITH DC9 TAXIING IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION. SINCE IT WAS NIGHTTIME; THE CAPT TURNED ON THE WING TURNOFF LIGHT TO ILLUMINATE THE AREA. THE DC9 WING SEEMED TO PASS UNDERNEATH THE B757 WING AS IT PASSED. CAPT BELIEVES THAT MORE INFO ABOUT WIDTHS OF CONVERGING TAXI AREAS BE SHOWN ON ARPT DIAGRAMS.

Narrative

I HAD LANDED MY B757; CLRED THE RWY; AND WAS TAXIING TO THE GATE. GND INSTRUCTED ME TO TAXI VIA AN OUTER TXWY TO JOIN ANOTHER TXWY. WHILE I WAS WBOUND ON THE OUTER TXWY; A DC9 WAS TAXIING EBOUND TO HIS GATE ON AN INNER TXWY. AS THE DC9 CONTINUED TAXIING I STOPPED MY TAXIING AND TURNED ON MY L TURNOFF LIGHT AS I WAS UNSURE OF OUR WINGTIP CLRNC. FROM MY POS IN MY COCKPIT NEITHER I NOR MY FO WERE SURE OF OUR WINGTIP CLRNC WITH THE DC9. THE DC9 CONTINUED HIS TAXI AS HE MUST HAVE BEEN CONFIDENT THAT OUR WINGTIPS HAD ADEQUATE HORIZ CLRNC. I AM FILING THIS RPT BECAUSE I BELIEVE THAT MY WINGTIP MIGHT HAVE CROSSED OVER THE TOP OF HIS WINGTIP AS HE TAXIED BY ME. WHILE I REALIZE IT IS NOT ALWAYS POSSIBLE TO PREDICT THESE TYPES OF EVENTS; I WOULD LIKE TO SEE MORE INFO CONCERNING POSSIBLE CHOKE- POINTS ON ARPTS WHERE TXWYS CONVERGE SUCH AS THESE DID THE OTHER NIGHT. PERHAPS A NOTE ON THE ARPT DIAGRAM PAGE OR SOME OTHER TYPE OF HEADS-UP MIGHT HELP IN PREVENTING THESE TYPES OF INCIDENTS IN THE FUTURE.
