Synopsis

AN ACR B727 FREIGHTER FLC STRUCK THE L WINGTIP WHILE TAXIING OUT. DAMAGE WAS MINOR AND THE ACFT CONTINUED IN SVC.

Narrative

DURING TAXI OUT OF BLOCKS ON SNOW-PATCHED RAMP (-9 DEGS C) AN IMMEDIATE R TURN WAS (AS USUAL) REQUIRED. THE NOSE OF THE ACFT COMES CLOSE TO THE BUILDING PRIOR TO MAKING THE TURN AND THE CAPT FELT THAT IT WAS TOO CLOSE AND BEGAN MAKING THE TURN EARLIER WITH THE MARSHALLER STILL WANTING HIM TO COME STRAIGHT. WE MUST HAVE BEEN TOO CLOSE BECAUSE; AS THE R TURN WAS COMMENCING; THE L WINGTIP CAME TOO CLOSE TO THE BUILDING. THE MARSHALLER GAVE THE STOP SIGNAL AND WE STOPPED. THE MARSHALLER BEGAN GIVING US INSTRUCTIONS TO COMMENCE WHILE CONTINUING THE R TURN. THE L WINGTIP; AT THAT TIME; TOUCHED THE ROLL-UP DOOR TO A GARAGE ENTRANCE EFFECTIVELY NICKING THE L WINGTIP ABOUT THE SIZE OF A QUARTER. WE WERE THEN GIVEN A SECOND STOP SIGNAL AND WE STOPPED. THE ENTIRE EVENT TOOK PLACE IN THE CONFINES OF THE CARGO RAMP. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 391818: THE YYC RAMP IS VERY TIGHT AND THE SNOW ON THE RAMP MADE MANEUVERING EVEN MORE DIFFICULT. BEING TOWED OUT OF OUR SPOT WOULD BE MUCH SAFER THAN THE CURRENT PWR OUT.
