FLC OF A B727 STRUCK A DEER DURING TKOF WITH THE L MAIN LNDG GEAR CAUSING THE CREW APPREHENSION ABOUT POSSIBLE DAMAGE OF THE ACFT. FOR THIS REASON; THE FLC DIVERTED TO ANOTHER NEARBY MAJOR ARPT FOR COMPANY MAINT INSPECTION OF THE ACFT. EMER GND EQUIP AND PERSONNEL WERE STANDING BY FOR THE LNDG.

Narrative

WE WERE DEPARTING RWY 28 AT BWI AT XA00 AM AND HAD TO WAIT FOR OUR LOAD CLOSEOUT. FO LEG. 2 ACFT DEPARTED PRIOR TO US. JUST AFTER V1 2 DEER WERE SPOTTED IN THE CTR OF THE RWY AND ROTATION WAS INCREASED TO AVOID DEER FROM HITTING NOSE GEAR. LOUD THUMP WAS HEARD AND FELT NEAR MAIN LNDG GEAR. GEAR WAS NOT RETRACTED AND FLAPS WERE RAISED TO 5 DEGS AFTER STABILITY OF ACFT HAD BEEN DETERMINED. AFTER DISCUSSION WITH OPS AND DISPATCH WE DIVERTED TO IAD WHERE ADEQUATE MAINT WAS FOR AN INSPECTION. FLY-BY WAS ACCOMPLISHED TO ENSURE THAT NO VISIBLE DAMAGE OR STUCK DEER PARTS WOULD COMPLICATE LNDG. NORMAL LNDG WAS MADE. CFR WAS WAITING. WE STOPPED ON THE RWY AT THE END AND HAD THE LNDG GEAR PINNED AND BRIEF INTEGRITY CHK. TAXIED TO RAMP WHERE FURTHER INSPECTION SHOWED THAT THE DEER HAD INDEED STRUCK THE L #2 TIRE AND GEAR DOOR ON THE FUSELAGE ALTHOUGH NO DAMAGE TO THE ACFT WAS NOTED. GOOD COORD BTWN COCKPIT CREW AND ALL APPROPRIATE CHKLIST WERE PERFORMED. LESSONS LEARNED: EVEN THOUGH 2 OTHER ACFT HAD DEPARTED PRIOR TO US DILIGENCE TO RWY CONDITIONS CAN CHANGE VERY QUICKLY. HAD THE DEER BEEN CLOSER ON THE RWY A MORE SERIOUS INCIDENT COULD HAVE HAPPENED WITH DAMAGE TO THE ACFT.
