Synopsis

A B727-200 WHILE PARKED WITH #1 ENG RUNNING A CATERER WAS INGESTED INTO THE ENG INCURRING PERSONAL INJURY.

Narrative

ARRIVING AT GATE IN MSP; COULD NOT GET ACFT TO ACCEPT EXTERNAL PWR (APU INOP). LEFT #1 ENG RUNNING WHILE OFF-LOADING PAX; WHILE STILL TRYING TO GET ACFT TO ACCEPT EXTERNAL (BEACONS ON). LEAD FLT ATTENDANT CAME RUNNING UP AISLE SAYING TO SHUT DOWN THE ENG; THAT SOMEBODY HAD BEEN SUCKED INSIDE. SHUT DOWN ENG. WENT TO BACK OF ACFT AND TALKED TO CATERER AFTER HE HAD BEEN REMOVED FROM INTAKE. HE SAID HE DID NOT KNOW THE ENG WAS RUNNING. #1 ENG RECEIVED FOD DAMAGE. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR STATED THE ACFT WAS PARKED ON THE GATE WITH THE #1 ENG AT IDLE PWR WHILE MAINT ATTEMPTED TO GET GND PWR ON THE ACFT. THE RPTR SAID THE APU WAS INOP SO GND PWR WAS REQUIRED. THE RPTR SAID THE UPPER AND LOWER BEACONS WERE ON AND FLASHING TO ALERT ALL RAMP PERSONNEL THE ENG OR ENGS WERE OPERATING. THE RPTR STATED THAT STATION PROCS REQUIRE THE AFT GALLEY BE SVCED THROUGH THE L AFT EXIT. THE RPTR SAID THE CATERING TRUCK PARKED NEXT TO THE DOOR AND THE CATERING SUPVR APCHED THE DOOR AND WAS IMMEDIATELY INGESTED INTO THE ENG INCURRING PERSONAL INJURY. THE RPTR STATED WHEN THE PERSON WAS REMOVED AND CHKED FOR THE NEED OF IMMEDIATE MEDICAL ATTN THE RPTR ASKED IF HE HAD HEARD THE ENG RUNNING AND HE REPLIED 'NO.' THE RPTR SAID THE INJURED PERSON SUFFERED 5 CRACKED RIBS. THE RPTR STATED COMPANY RAMP PROCS ARE NOW BEING REVISED TO PREVENT A REPEAT OF THIS EVENT.
