AFTER HANDLING A CATASTROPHIC ENG FAILURE AND RETURN TO LAND; AN A320 CREW MAKES A WRONG TURN AFTER LNDG ONTO AN INCORRECT TXWY FOR THE RETURN TO THE GATE.

Narrative

AFTER DEPARTING SFO FOR CYYC; WE EXPERIENCED A CATASTROPHIC ENG FAILURE OF THE #2 ENG. AFTER DEALING WITH THE NUMEROUS ECAM CHKLISTS; BRIEFING THE FLT ATTENDANTS; NOTIFYING COMPANY; AND TALKING TO ATC; WE MADE AN UNEVENTFUL LNDG BACK AT SFO ON RWY 28R. WHILE CONFIGURING FOR SINGLE ENG TAXI; CLRING THE RWY; AND DEALING WITH OUR MANY OTHER CONCERNS; WE MADE A R TURN ONTO TXWY A. WE HAD BEEN INSTRUCTED TO USE TXWY B. THERE WAS NO CONFLICT WITH ANY TFC; HOWEVER. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 476082: ELAPSED TIME FROM FAILURE TO TOUCHDOWN WAS 12 MINS. UPON CLRING THE RWY; WE DIRECTED TO OUR GATE VIA TXWY B. SHORTLY AFTER; GND CTL ADVISED US WE WERE ON TXWY A. APPARENTLY; THE COMBINATION OF THE PREVIOUS INCIDENT AND INTENSIVE TXWY RECONSTRUCTION ACTIVITY IN THAT AREA WERE SUFFICIENT CAUSE FOR US TO MISS THE TURNOFF TO TXWY B. STILL; GND CTL WAS SATISFIED THERE WAS NO TFC CONFLICT; AND THAT WE WERE TO CONTINUE ON TXWY A. POSTFLT INSPECTION REVEALED GRANULAR METAL IN THE TAILPIPE CORE INDICATING SUBSTANTIAL INTERNAL FAILURE. ALL DAMAGE WAS CONTAINED WITHIN THE NACELLE.
