RWY INCURSION AT EWR.
Narrative
A NORMAL LNDG WAS MADE ON RWY 4R IN EWR. DURING ROLLOUT; WE WERE INSTRUCTED TO CROSS RWY 29 AND TURN L ON TXWY Z. NO RWY HOLD SHORT INSTRUCTION WAS RECEIVED. WE TAXIED A VERY SHORT DISTANCE ON TXWY Z. THE OTHER PARALLEL RWY 4L DID NOT APPEAR TO CONTINUE ON PAST TXWY Z. AFTER A PERIOD OF TIME WITH NO WORD FROM THE TWR; WE SWITCHED TO GND CTL. GND CTL INSTRUCTED US TO GO BACK TO TWR FREQ. THE TWR INSTRUCTED US THAT A POSSIBLE DEV MAY HAVE OCCURRED. WE HAD EXPECTED TO TURN OFF OF RWY 4R BEFORE XING RWY 29. ATC HAD CLRED AN ACFT INTO POS AND HOLD ON RWY 29. VERY LATE INTO OUR LNDG ROLL; THEY INSTRUCTED US TO CROSS RWY 29 AND TURN L ON TXWY Z. IF WE WOULD HAVE HEARD A HOLD SHORT COMMAND FROM ATC; WE WOULD HAVE STOPPED SHORT OF RWY 4L. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 480058: TWR TOLD US WE WERE CLR TO CROSS RWY 29 ONTO TXWY Z AND THAT AN ACR WAS HOLDING FOR US. WE DID NOT HEAR ANY HOLD SHORT INSTRUCTIONS FOR RWY 4L (THIS WAS LATER CONFIRMED). WHILE I WAS ON THE RADIO; I OVERHEARD THE PLTS TALKING THAT WE HAD JUST CROSSED RWY 4L AND MISSED THE HOLD SHORT LINES. FACTORS INVOLVED IN THIS EVENT WERE: 1) ALL 3 OF US WERE UNFAMILIAR WITH THE FIELD. 2) IT IS NOT OBVIOUS AT FIRST GLANCE ON THE ARPT DIAGRAM THAT THE END OF RWY 4L ENCROACHES ABOUT 20 FT INTO TXWY Z. 3) THE HOLD SHORT LINES FOR RWY 4L WERE VERY CLOSE TO RWY 4R BY THE TIME WE TAXIED OFF. 4) HAVING TO CALL FOR GATE AND TAXI INSTRUCTIONS. HAD I KNOWN ABOUT RWY 4L; I WOULD HAVE WAITED UNTIL XING BEFORE CALLING.
