Narrative

FLT WAS SCHEDULED TO DEPART ZZZ AT XA10 TO XXX. PREFLT CHKS WERE ACCOMPLISHED WITH NO ABNORMALS NOTED. AT APPROX XB55; NOTICED L ENG ANTI-ICE R VALVE OPEN LIGHT ILLUMINATED. CALLED MAINT WHO CAME OUT TO CHK. DISCUSSED OPTIONS WITH THEM. I DECIDED I WANTED MEL 30-3A VALVE WIRED CLOSED. MAINT THEN TALKED TO DISPATCH WHO WANTED MEL 30-3B VALVE WIRED OPEN APPLIED. MAINT PERFORMED MEL PROCS. ON PUSHBACK; AMENDED DISPATCH RELEASE WAS RECEIVED BUT NOTICED MEL 30-3B ISSUED VALVE WIRED OPEN. VERIFIED WITH COMPANY ON RADIO MEL 30-3B ACCEPTED RERELEASE. TAXI OUT; TKOF CLB WAS ALL NORMAL. OUT OF 10000 FT; NOTICED HIGHER THAN NORMAL OIL TEMP; BUT STILL IN THE GREEN ARC. OUT OF FL180; OIL TEMP WAS IN YELLOW BAND. THAT'S WHEN I SAW L ENG FUEL HEAT LIGHT ON. CONFIRMED FUEL HEAT ON WITH OIL TEMP GAUGE AND USE OF QRH. ELECTED TO RETURN TO ZZZ. AFTER 14 MINS IN YELLOW ARC; SHUT DOWN L ENG PER PROCS. DECLARED AN EMER AND PROCEEDED DIRECT TO ZZZ. LANDED NORMALLY AND TAXIED TO GATE. MAINT FOUND L ENG FUEL HEAT WIRED OPEN AND NOT L ENG ANTI-ICE.
