Synopsis

CL65 CREW HAD AN ACFT THAT WAS DAMAGED WHEN BEING PUSHED OUT OF A HANGAR AT RDU.

Narrative

WE ARE A 121 CARRIER. MY FO AND I RPTED FOR DUTY AT RDU AT APPROX XA00. IT WAS DARK AND OUR ACFT WAS AT THE GATE WITH THE APU OPERATING. WE HAVE CONTRACT MAINT IN RDU AND I WAS NOT AWARE THAT THE PLANE HAD BEEN TOWED TO THE GATE FROM THE HANGAR AS IT WAS PARKED IN ITS USUAL OVERNIGHT PARKING LOCATION. MY FO PERFORMED THE EXTERNAL PREFLT AND I PERFORMED THE INTERIOR FIRST FLT OF THE DAY/ACCEPTANCE CHKS. IT WAS DARK OUTSIDE BUT MY FO WAS USING A FLASHLIGHT. HE DID NOT RPT ANYTHING ABNORMAL. AFTER TKOF AND DURING CLBOUT EVERYTHING WAS NORMAL. WE LEVELED OFF AT FL330 ENRTE TO BOS. AS WE BEGAN OUR DSCNT WE ACCELERATED THROUGH APPROX MACH .83 AND I FELT A SLIGHT VIBRATION. I THOUGHT WE MAY HAVE PICKED UP A LITTLE ICE IN THE CLBOUT SO I SLOWED TO APPROX MACH .79 AND THE VIBRATION STOPPED. THE REMAINDER OF THE FLT WAS NORMAL. AFTER PARKING IN BOS AND DEPLANING PAX MY FO PERFORMED A POSTFLT EXTERIOR INSPECTION. HE INFORMED ME THAT THE ACFT WAS DAMAGED. I EXITED THE ACFT AND NOTICED THAT THE L WINGLET WAS DAMAGED AND DISTORTED. I NOTIFIED OUR COMPANY. A FEW DAYS LATER I RECEIVED A TELEPHONE CALL FROM OUR VICE PRESIDENT OF SAFETY. HE INFORMED ME THAT THE EMPLOYEES OF THE MAINT FACILITY APPARENTLY PULLED OUR ACFT OUT OF THE MAINT HANGAR AND DRAGGED OUR WINGLET ACROSS THE UNDERSIDE OF A JETSTREAM CAUSING SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO THE JETSTREAM. THEY BELIEVE SINCE THE CANADAIR WAS BEING TOWED STRAIGHT; IT LIFTED THE JETSTREAM AND DID DAMAGE TO THE TOP OF OUR WINGLET. WHEN WE STARTED OUR DSCNT THE AIRFLOW STRUCK THE DAMAGED TOP OF THE WINGLET CAUSING IT TO COME APART.
