Narrative

SID CALLED FOR R OR L TURN AFTER TKOF. CLRNC WAS GIVEN FOR L TURN AFTER TKOF TO INTERMEDIATE ALT ON RWY 8. ENG OUT DEP CALLED FOR R TURN AND WE WERE EXPECTING A R TURN. I CONFIRMED WITH COPLT THAT THE INSTRUCTIONS WERE FOR A R TURN WHEN JUMP SEATER (CHK AIRMAN) CHALLENGED US ON DEP INSTRUCTIONS. DID NOT VERIFY WITH ATC. HALFWAY THROUGH TURN OUT ATC INFORMED WE HAD BEEN GIVEN A L TURN OUT. NO TFC OR TERRAIN CONFLICTS. WE JUST MISUNDERSTOOD INSTRUCTIONS. 'WE HEARD WHAT WE WERE PROGRAMMED TO HEAR' SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 491162: ATC GAVE A L TURN TO 310 DEGS AFTER TKOF ON RWY 8 (ABQ). WE HEARD R TURN AND MADE A R TURN AFTER TKOF. AT 170 DEG HDG ATC NOTIFIED US OF THE ERROR AND GAVE US A 170 DEG HDG AND CLBOUT. NO NEAR MISSES; CONFLICTS; OR TERRAIN AVOIDANCE MANEUVERS NEEDED. THERE WAS NO PROBS WITH TFC CREATED BY OUR ERROR. FACTORS: LONG AND FAST CLRNC READBACK BY ATC. WE READ BACK CLRNC WITH INCORRECT DIRECTION AND WAS NOT CORRECTED. SO CHK AIRMEN ONBOARD QUESTIONED READBACK BUT CAPT AND FO WERE POSITIVE OF R TURN CLRNC BEING CORRECT. SO (MYSELF) DID NOT HEAR THE CLRNC AND ASSUMED THAT THE CAPT AND FO WERE CORRECT. I SHOULD HAVE INSISTED ON A CLARIFICATION WITH ATC.
