CAPT OF A CANADAIR CL65 STOPPED SHORT DURING TAXI IN AFTER LEAVING RWY CAUSING THE ACFT'S TAIL TO HANG OVER THE RWY AND THE TWR CTLR TO REMIND HIM THAT HE NEEDED TO TAXI TO THE POINT ORIGINALLY CLRED.

Narrative

DURING ROLLOUT AFTER LNDG RDU RWY 23R; ATC TOLD US TO TURN L ONTO TXWY C; PROCEED ON TXWY C TO HOLD SHORT OF TXWY A. I READ BACK THE CLRNC AND BEGAN THE AFTER LNDG FLOW CHKLIST. UPON COMPLETION ABOUT 20 SECONDS LATER; I NOTICED THE CAPT HAD MADE THE L TURN ONTO TXWY C; BUT HAD NOT PULLED FORWARD FAR ENOUGH FOR OUR TAIL TO PASS OVER/CLR OF THE RWY 23R HOLD SHORT LINE AT TXWY C. IN OTHER WORDS; OUR TAIL WAS TECHNICALLY STILL HANGING INTO THE LNDG AREA; ALTHOUGH ONLY BY A FEW FT. I WAS LOOKING AT THE RWY SIGNS AND TXWY SIGNS VISIBLE FROM THE COCKPIT AND COULD FIND NO REASON FOR THE CAPT TO HAVE STOPPED WHERE HE DID. TXWY A WAS ABOUT 3500 FT AHEAD ON TXWY C AND PERPENDICULAR TO TXWY C. ABOUT THE TIME I GOT THIS ALL FIGURED OUT AND WAS GOING TO TELL THE CAPT THAT WE SHOULD CONTINUE FORWARD AND CLR OF THE RWY; ATC CALLED TO TELL US TO PULL FORWARD AND CONTINUE ALONG TXWY C. I WAS UNFAMILIAR WITH THIS ARPT. AND EVEN THOUGH MY TAXI DIAGRAM WAS OPEN AND READY; THERE WAS INSUFFICIENT TIME TO FIGURE OUT OUR SIT AND ACT BEFORE ATC STEPPED IN. IN THE FUTURE; I WILL MARK OUR GATE LOCATION ON THE DIAGRAM AND LOOK OVER LIKELY TAXI RTES TO THE GATE BASED ON THE EXPECTED RWY IN USE.
