Narrative

GIVEN A CLRNC TO CROSS 30 MI S OF OKK 280. FO FLYING. I PUT ALT IN MCP WINDOW AND CONFIRMED. HOWEVER; FO PERFORMED FMS PROGRAMMING VERSUS MY NORMAL HABIT OF WORKING FMS AS PNF. HE LOADED WAYPOINT AND RESTR; MADE A NUMBER OF ADJUSTMENTS TO DSCNT PAGE; AND EITHER FAILED TO ENGAGE VNAV -- ALTHOUGH HE SAID HE DID -- OR IT TRIPPED OFF DUE TO A PROGRAMMING ERROR. I DID NOT VERIFY THE MCP SETTINGS AS I KNEW HIM TO BE A FAIRLY COMPETENT FO. AFTER HE FINISHED PROGRAMMING; I HAD BEEN GETTING NOTAMS FOR ORD AND LOOKED UP AND NOTICED DSCNT DID NOT COMMENCE; TOLD HIM; AND HURRIED DOWN MISSING RESTR BY APPROX 900 FT. ATC SEEING THIS CLRED US TO FL240. HOWEVER; DURING HURRY TO MAKE RESTR TO 280; FMS WENT TO ALT CAPTURE AND AS A RESULT; OUR COMMENTS ABOUT 'WHAT HAPPENED; ETC' IN MISSING ATL RESTR CAUSED US TO NOT NOTICE THE SECOND DSCNT TO FL240. ATC QUERIED US AND WE REALIZED LEVEL AT FL280. FOCUS ON FIRST MISTAKE LED US TO MAKE A SECOND. FO CONTINUED TO INSIST AUTOFLT SYS CAUSED PROB. HOWEVER; I BROKE DOWN IN MY DISCIPLINE IN DEMANDING THE PROGRAMMING OF FMC BY PNF-DISCIPLINE OF NOT DOING ANYTHING WHEN CLBING OR DSNDING. FO WAS GETTING PLATES OUT ON FIRST ERROR; AND THEN NOT PUTTING THE ERROR BEHIND US. FO FELT AUTOFLT WAS PROB; BUT I FEEL OUR ERRORS WERE POOR COCKPIT DISCIPLINE ON MY PART; BREAKING WITH MY PATTERNS.
