B727 FLC INDECISION; LGB ARPT CONSTRUCTION AND GND CTLR BADGERING CAUSE TAXI ONTO A WING SPAN RESTR AREA.
Narrative
LGB ARPT HAD CONSTRUCTION ON NUMEROUS TXWYS IN PROGRESS. THE NORMAL TAXI RTE TO OUR DEP RWY (RWY 30) WAS NOT USEABLE. I WAS FAMILIAR WITH THE ARPT AND AWARE THAT NUMEROUS RWYS AND TXWYS WERE RESTR FOR OP BY OUR ACFT TYPE (B727). AFTER PUSHBACK AND START; THE FO CALLED LGB GND FOR TAXI. THE GND CTLR GAVE US INSTRUCTIONS TO TAXI TO AND HOLD SHORT OF RWY 25L; USE TXWY D; AND HOLD SHORT OF RWY 34R. WE; THE CREW; THOUGHT THESE INSTRUCTIONS WERE INCORRECT; SO; I CALLED GND CTL TO VERIFY OUR TAXI INSTRUCTIONS. AT THE END OF MY XMISSION; WE COULD HEAR THE LAST PART OF LGB GND'S NEW TAXI INSTRUCTIONS. I THEN TRIED TO EXPLAIN THAT WE BLOCKED THEIR XMISSION AND TO 'SAY AGAIN.' LGB GND GOT UPSET WITH US AND SAID JUST TAXI STRAIGHT AHEAD; AND THAT LGB GND WOULD GUIDE US FOR OUR TAXI (GIVE US PROGRESSIVE TAXI INSTRUCTIONS). LGB GND ALSO INCLUDED THAT WE WERE TO TAXI VIA TXWY F; L ON TXWY D; R ON RWY 25L TO CROSS RWY 30; AND R ON TXWY L TO RWY 30. IN THE MEANTIME WE WERE TRYING TO FIGURE OUT THE TAXI RTE (THE TAXI WAS DIFFERENT FROM 2 DAYS BEFORE). LGB GND CALLED US AGAIN AND URGED US TO START OUR TAXI SO THEY COULD DIRECT US. I FAILED TO REMEMBER RWY 25L HAD A MAX WINGSPAN LIMIT OF 90 FT. WE TAXIED AT THE INSISTENCE OF LGB GND. IN MY HASTE I COMPLIED WITH LGB GND CTL'S INSISTENCE. UNFORTUNATELY; WE COMPLIED WITH LGB GND'S CLRNC AND TAXIED BRIEFLY ON RWY 25L FROM TXWY D TO TXWY L. I HAD AN UNEASY FEELING ABOUT THE WHOLE EVENT. AFTER DEP; I FOUND THE NOTE ON A COMPANY PAGE THAT RWY 25L WAS RESTR TO ACFT WITH WINGSPANS 90 FT OF LESS. OUR ACFT'S WINGSPAN IS 108 FT! I CONFUSED THE RWY RESTRS FOR RWY 25R AND RWY 25L. HOW TO PREVENT THIS SIT IN THE FUTURE. 1) IF IN DOUBT; ALWAYS STOP AND FIND OUT FOR SURE; 2) NEVER LET ATC PUSH YOU INTO DOING SOMETHING BEFORE YOU ARE ALREADY; 3) ALWAYS KNOW AHEAD WHAT TAXI ROUTES YOU CAN AND CANNOT TAKE; AND 4) DO NOT BE COMPLACENT. IF SOMETHING IS DIFFERENT; ASK WHY!
