A CARJ CREW; TAXIING TO THE RAMP AT CYYZ; LOST POSITIONAL AWARENESS AND MISSED TURNING ON ASSIGNED TXWY.

Narrative

AFTER LNDG ON RWY 24R IN YYZ; WE TURNED OFF ON TXWY C4. WE RECEIVED A TAXI CLRNC; 'TURN R ON TXWY D; L ON TXWY E; HOLD SHORT OF TXWY S.' THE AIRPLANE THAT WAS DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF US WAS CLRED 'TXWY D; CROSS RWY 33R TO THE GATE.' I ASSUMED THAT TXWY E WAS ON THE OTHER SIDE OF RWY 33R AND CONTINUED STRAIGHT AHEAD ON TXWY D; FOLLOWING THE TFC IN FRONT OF ME. AS WE APCHED THE HOLD SHORT LINE OF RWY 33R; GND INFORMED US THAT WE MISSED TXWY E AND CLRED US TO CROSS RWY 33R. AT THIS POINT; I WAS 1/2 WAY ACROSS THE HOLD SHORT LINE FOR RWY 33R. AT NO TIME WITH OUR COM (INITIAL) DID LEV (GND) TELL US TO HOLD SHORT OF ANY RWY; SO I WAS NOT INCLINED TO QUESTION WHETHER IT WAS OK TO CROSS RWY 33R; THINKING THAT TXWY E WAS ON THE OTHER SIDE OF IT. OBVIOUSLY WE WERE NOT SITUATIONALLY AWARE OF OUR POS ON THE GND RELATIVE TO THE INITIAL TAXI CLRNC. ONE PROB THAT OCCURS AT ALL BUSY ARPTS IS THAT THE GND CTLRS; TO ONE EXTENT OR ANOTHER; ASSUME THAT ALL ACR (AIRLINE) CREWS ALWAYS KNOW WHERE WE ARE GOING AND ARE FAMILIAR TO THE ARPT AND SURROUNDINGS. ATC CTLRS NEED TO BE TRAINED AS PART OF THE TEAM ON THE FLT DECK. ALL ATC CTLRS SHOULD BE GIVEN CRM TRAINING SO WE CAN ALL WORK TOGETHER BETTER.
