B757 CREW CALLED SFO TWR ON THE PHONE TO COMPLAIN ABOUT BEING OVERTAKEN BY A B747 WHILE ON SHORT FINAL.

Narrative

B757 ON VISUAL APCH TO RWY 28R. WHEN CHKED ON FREQ; I ASKED HIM TO SLOW SO I COULD GET A DEP OUT BTWN HIM AND THE PREVIOUS ARRS. B747 ON VISUAL APCH TO RWY 28L WITH ABOUT A 30 KT OVERTAKE AND 1 1/2 - 2 MI BEHIND THE B757. WHEN HE CHKED ON; I SLOWED THE B747 SO AS TO NOT OVERTAKE THE B757. THE SIT WAS NORMAL; AND I DID NOT OBSERVE THE B747 OVERTAKE THE B757 ON FINAL. WHEN 2 ACFT ARE SO CLOSE TOGETHER (750 FT CTRLINE TO CTRLINE); IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO TELL WHICH ACFT IS AHEAD OR BEHIND. THEY APPEARED TO BE SIDE-BY-SIDE WHEN I LAST CHKED THE SIT AT THE THRESHOLD OF THE RWY. THE PLT OF THE B757 CALLED TO COMPLAIN OF AN OVERTAKE ON FINAL AT 300 FT AGL BY THE B747. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 564214: WHILE FLYING THE FMS BRIDGE VISUAL TO RWY 28R AT SFO; A B747 VIOLATED LCL PROCS AND OVERTOOK MY ACFT WHILE FLYING A VISUAL APCH TO RWY 28L. B757 WAS NOT SPACED PROPERLY BY APCH/SFO TWR. B747'S FINAL APCH SPD WAS 20-40 KTS FASTER THAN OURS (125 KTS). OUR COMMERCIAL CHART PAGES STATE IN PART THAT A HVY/B757 WILL NOT BE AUTH TO OVERTAKE ANOTHER ACFT LNDG ON A PARALLEL RWY. BAY APCH AND SFO TWR NEED TO BE BETTER COORDINATED WHEN DIRECTING ACFT OF DISSIMILAR AIRSPDS DURING PARALLEL APCHS.
