B757 ON MISSED APCH AT LGA OVERSHOOTS ASSIGNED ALT.

Narrative

ON MISSED APCH LDA-A RWY 22; ACFT CLBED THROUGH 3000 FT TO 3300 FT. ACFT WAS BACK AT 3000 FT PRIOR TO ANOTHER ACFT XING 1000 FT OVERHEAD (VERIFIED BY TCASII). OTHER ACFT IN SIGHT AT ALL TIMES. WHILE FLYING VNAV APCH 2 NM OUTSIDE FAF (COHOP); ALT 2050 FT; AWI SET 1100 FT (APCH MINIMUMS); AUTOPLT ENGAGED; TWR INSTRUCTED CLB TO GO AROUND. CAPT INITIATED WITH GA SWITCH. TWR INSTRUCTED CLB TO 2000 FT; RWY HDG. ACFT WAS ALREADY IN A CLB. (MISSED APCH ALT FOR APCH WAS HIGHER THAN 2000 FT.) CAPT DISENGAGED AUTOPLT AND RETURNED TO ALT WHERE WE STARTED CLEANING UP ACFT. DURING CLEANUP; TWR SWITCHED US TO LGA APCH CTL WHO INSTRUCTED CLB TO 3000 FT AND HDG 090 DEGS. ACFT CLBED THROUGH 3000 FT TO 3300 FT. ACFT WAS IN VERT SPD MODE AND THE FLT DIRECTOR WAS COMMANDING A CLB ON THE GYRO AT THE TIME. DURING ANNUAL TRAINING; GAR'S ARE DONE AFTER THE FAF; WHEN THE AWI IS ALREADY SET TO THE MISSED APCH ALT. REAL WORLD GAR'S ARE USUALLY INITIATED MUCH EARLIER IN THE FINAL APCH WHERE STANDARD GAR PROCS DO NOT APPLY. WE SHOULD PRACTICE THIS TYPE OF SCENARIO.
