AFTER EXPERIENCING RUNAWAY STABILIZER TRIM; FLT CREW OF CRJ PERFORMED INAPPROPRIATE ABNORMAL TRIM CHKLIST VICE RUNAWAY STABILIZER TRIM EMER CHKLIST. FORTUNATELY; THE ANOMALY DID NOT RECUR AND THE ERROR WAS DISCOVERED AFTER A SAFE LNDG.
Narrative
I WAS FLYING THE ACFT MANUALLY ON CLBOUT FROM DFW. I BEGAN TRIMMING THE NOSE DOWN IN ORDER TO ACCELERATE FROM 250 KTS TO 290 KTS AT APPROX 12000 FT AFTER ATC REMOVED OUR 250 KT SPD RESTR. I NOTICED UNUSUAL NOSE DOWN FORCE ON THE CTL YOKE AND THE ACFT DSNDED APPROX 100 FT WHILE I WAS ATTEMPTING TO COMPENSATE. THE HORIZ STABILIZER TRIM WARBLER SOUNDED AND I DISCONNECTED THE STABILIZER TRIM ON THE CTL YOKE IMMEDIATELY. I TOLD THE FO I WOULD FLY THE ACFT (MANUALLY; BECAUSE THE AUTOPLT ISN'T USABLE WITHOUT HORIZ STABILIZER TRIM) AND WORK THE RADIOS. I ASSIGNED HIM THE RESPONSIBILITY OF COMPLETING THE 'HORIZ STABILIZER TRIM RWY' CHKLIST; WHICH IS LOCATED IN THE 'EMER' SECTION OF THE QRH. AFTER AN UNEVENTFUL LNDG AT DFW; IT CAME TO MY ATTN THAT HE HAD ACTUALLY COMPLETED THE 'HORIZ STABILIZER TRIM MALFUNCTION' CHKLIST; WHICH IS LOCATED IN THE 'ABNORMAL' SECTION OF THE QRH. PARTLY DUE TO TASK SATURATION; I FAILED TO CATCH THIS ERROR. COMPLETING THE INCORRECT CHKLIST MEANT THAT HE RE-ENGAGED STABILIZER TRIM CHANNEL 2. THIS ACTION COULD HAVE SERIOUSLY WORSENED OUR SIT HAD HORIZ STABILIZER TRIM CHANNEL 2 BEEN THE CAUSE OF THE MALFUNCTION.
