CARJ TAXIING FOR DEP AT OMA IS CONFUSED WITH RWY ASSIGNMENT; STOPS ABRUPTLY AND CAUSED GAR.

Narrative

ON AUG/SUN/03 IN OMA NE; WE WERE GIVEN TAXI TO RWY 14R BY GND CTL. MY FO READ BACK 'TAXI TO RWY 14R.' WHILE TAXIING OUT I THOUGHT WE WERE GIVEN RWY 14L; AFTER SEEING TAXI SIGNS FOR RWY 14L. AS WE WERE APCHING RWY 14R ON TXWY FOXTROT MY FO WAS LOOKING DOWN PROGRAMMING THE FMS SYSTEM WHEN GND CTL SAID; 'ACFT X STOP! STOP!' I STOPPED THE ACFT ABRUPTLY ON TXWY FOXTROT ABOUT 10 TO 15 FT SHORT OF THE HOLD SHORT LINE FOR RWY 14R. I LOOKED AROUND TO SEE WHY THE URGENCY FOR THE STOP. AS I LOOKED TO THE L I SAW AN ACFT ALREADY ON THE GAR; THEIR GEAR WAS UP AND WERE ALREADY BEGINNING THEIR CLIMB. AS THE ACFT PASSED BY WE DETERMINED THE ACFT WAS A B737. AFTER THE ACFT WAS CLR WE WERE GIVEN INSTRUCTIONS TO CROSS RWY 14R. I QUARRIED THE GND CTLR TO CONFIRM THAT WE WERE GIVEN RWY 14L. SHE SAID 'NEGATIVE RWY 14R.' I THEN APOLOGIZED FOR MY MISUNDERSTANDING. THE GND CTLR THEN GAVE US TAXI INSTRUCTIONS BACK AROUND TO RWY 14R FOR DEP. PRIOR TO TAKEOFF THE TWR GAVE ME A PHONE TO CONTACT THE TWR SUPVR WHEN WE GOT BACK TO MEMPHIS. AFTER LNDG IN MEMPHIS I GAVE THE TWR SUPVR A CALL; HE THEN INFORMED ME THE TWR HAD TO FILE A PLT DEVIATION RPT TO THE FAA. IN SHORT I ADMIT MY MISTAKE FOR TAXIING TO THE WRONG RWY; BUT AT NO TIME DID GND CTL GIVE US TAXI INSTRUCTIONS THE FIRST TIME TO RWY 14R. NOR DID I CROSS THE HOLD SHORT LINE FOR RWY 14R; AND MY FO RECALLS NOT CROSSING IT AS WELL; WHEN I STOPPED THE ACFT. I FEEL THE GAR OF THE B737 WAS CONDUCTED PREMATURELY DUE TO THE COMMUNICATION BETWEEN THE TWR AND GND CTLRS. ALTHOUGH IN THE INTEREST OF SAFETY IT WAS PROBABLY JUSTIFIABLE.
