A 3 DAY SEQUENCE COMPLETED BY AN AIRLINE CAPT ILLUSTRATES HOW SCHEDULE CHANGES AND SLEEP PATTERN INTERRUPTIONS CAN LEAD TO FATIGUE.

Narrative

I WAS CALLED BY THE CREW DESK AT APPROX XA15 ON OCT/FRI/03 AND ASSIGNED NUMBER AFTER BEING ADVISED SEVERAL HRS EARLIER I WAS GOING TO BE ASSIGNED A FLT TO IAD AT AROUND XA00. THE NEW FLT DEPARTED AT XE00 IN 3 HRS 35 MINS. I WAS ASKED TO EXPEDITE MY ARR TO DECISION HT TO LAS AS THEY WOULD HAVE TO HOLD THE FLT FOR ME. IT WAS A DEADHEADING FLT TO LAS AND FLT X. ENRTE; I RECEIVED AN ACARS FROM THE CREW DESK AMENDING MY DEADHEADING ON ACR TO EWR TO PICK UP A JFK TRIP. I CONNECTED TO EWR ON ACR AND OVERNIGHTED IN EWR. THERE WAS NO XPORTATION WAITING IN EWR AND IT REQUIRED APPROX 30 MINS TO ARRANGE FOR A LIMO. UPON ARR AT THE HOTEL; THERE WAS ANOTHER WAIT AS THE HOTEL WAS APPARENTLY NOT ADVISED OF MY ARR AND IT TOOK AWHILE TO GET A ROOM. I SLEPT VERY LITTLE (APPROX 4 HRS) IN EWR DUE TO NOISE IN THE HOTEL. CONTINUED THE DAY AS SCHEDULED. DAY #3 WAS AN XE00 DEP. I ARRIVED AT EWR AND EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBS WITH XPORTATION AND HOTEL AS PREVIOUSLY EXPERIENCED. DESK CALLED ME AT XG25 AND ADVISED THAT THEY WERE AMENDING MY TRIP FROM A SCHEDULED XE00 EWR TO LGA AT XB00 AND FLY LGA-DEN; THEN DEADHEADING DEN-SFO. MY SLEEP PATTERN WAS AGAIN DISTURBED -- NOW 3 OUT OF 4 NIGHTS. SO I DEPARTED FROM EWR WITH VIRTUALLY NO REST TO LGA. I FLEW THE ASSIGNMENT AS SCHEDULED. I FEEL THAT IN RETROSPECT; I SHOULD HAVE REFUSED THE REASSIGNMENT IN EWR. HOWEVER; I CONTINUED TO DEN AND SFO. I ARRIVED IN SFO EXTREMELY FATIGUED AND CALLED CREW DESK TO RPT FATIGUED WHEN I GOT HOME AT XC00. I BELIEVE THAT I WAS IN DANGER OF A HUMAN FACTORS ERROR AS I FOUND MYSELF FORGETTING TO COMPLY WITH BASIC SOP. IT IS ACCEPTABLE TO CALL IN SICK BUT NOT TO CALL IN TIRED. I BELIEVE WE NEED TO ADDRESS THIS ISSUE; ESPECIALLY AMONG THE A320 FLEET; AS MANY ARE FLYING IN EXCESS OF 90 HRS/MONTH AND I FEEL WE ARE IN DANGER OF A HUMAN FACTORS INCIDENT OR AN ACCIDENT DUE TO FATIGUE.
