DEPARTED BOS RWY 22R. WITHIN 1 MIN OF TKOF A 'SMOKE CARGO' WARNING PRESENTED. WARNING CEASED; THEN RETURNED WITHIN 30 SECONDS. FO DIRECTED TO ASSUME RADIO CTL. CAPT PERFORMED CHKLIST FOR SMOKE CARGO WARNING. EMER DECLARED. ATC VECTORED FOR IMMEDIATE RETURN TO LAND ON RWY 27. COMMUNICATED WITH FLT ATTENDANT TO BRIEF THE CIRCUMSTANCE AND TO VERIFY STATUS OF CABIN. NO SMOKE; FLAME; OR ODOR RPTED. UNEVENTFUL; BUT OVERWT LNDG PERFORMED BY FO. ACFT TAXIED OFF LNDG RWY ONTO TXWY W. EVAC INITIATED UTILIZING MAIN (FORWARD) CABIN DOOR ONLY. PAX WERE DIRECTED TO CONGREGATE FORWARD AND UPWIND OF ACFT. CFR WAS INFORMED OF PRESENCE OF HALON VAPOR IN CARGO COMPARTMENT. EVAC WAS ORDERLY WITH NO ADVERSE CIRCUMSTANCES OR INJURIES NOTED. ACFT WAS SECURED. FO PERFORMED FLAWLESSLY; A STRONG ASSET TO THE SUCCESSFUL OUTCOME OF THE EMER. FLT ATTENDANT PERFORMED IDEALLY; REMAINED CALM AND HELPED THE PAX REMAIN CALM. ATC (DEP; TWR THEN GND) PROVIDED RAPID; ACCURATE HELP; ANOTHER STRONG ASSET. CFR WAS WAITING FOR US. MET ACFT AS WE STOPPED AND ASSISTED WITH EVAC.
