Synopsis

A CARJ FLT CREW LANDS PARTIAL FLAPS AFTER DETECTING A HYD LEAK IN THEIR #2 SYS PRIOR TO LNDG AT CVG.

Narrative

TOWARD THE END OF AN UNEVENTFUL FLT; SOME 30 MINS FROM ARR; WE WERE DSNDING THROUGH APPROX FL370 WHEN WE RECEIVED A CAUTION CHIME AND A 'HYD SYS #2 LOW PRESSURE' MESSAGE ON EICAS. THE QRH WAS CONSULTED AND WE NOTED LOW HYD FLUID QUANTITY IN THE #2 SYS RESERVOIR (MORE THAN 15%). THE ABNORMAL CHKLIST WAS RUN AND ADVISED A REDUCED FLAP LNDG (20 DEGS) WITH BRAKING EFFECTIVENESS DECREASED AND LNDG DISTANCE INCREASED. COMPANY DISPATCHER WAS CONSULTED BY RADIO AND A NEW LNDG DISTANCE CALCULATED AT OUR DEST ARPT (NEAREST SUITABLE). WE ADVISED OUR FLT ATTENDANTS OF THE PROB; BUT THAT THEY SHOULD EXPECT NO NOTICEABLE DIFFERENCE ON THE APCH AND LNDG. OUR LNDG WT WAS RELATIVELY LIGHT FOR THE CRJ700 (54000 LBS); A LONG; DRY RWY AWAITED US WITH MODEST WIND. AN UNEVENTFUL APCH AND LNDG WERE MADE IN CVG. ATC WAS ADVISED OF THE PROB AND WE TOLD THEM OUR APCH AND TOUCHDOWN SPD WOULD ONLY BE SOMEWHAT HIGHER. AFTER BLOCK-IN AT OUR GATE THERE WERE LARGE AMOUNTS OF HYD FLUID IN THE AFT EQUIP BAY. MECHS MEETING THE ACFT SUSPECTED A CHAFED HYD LINE FROM THE PUMP.
