AN ERJ200 CREW LNDG ON RWY 34 AT RIC RECEIVED LAST MIN INSTRUCTIONS TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 20 AND MISSED THE HOLD SHORT LINE MARKINGS.

Narrative

LNDG RWY 34 DURING THE ROLLOUT; APPROX 80 KIAS; WE WERE INSTRUCTED TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 20 FOR DEPARTING TFC. THIS TOOK US BY SURPRISE BECAUSE IT SOUNDED TO ME A LITTLE LIKE A LAHSO. (I REALIZE IT ISN'T; BUT I HADN'T BEEN ASKED TO DO THIS WITH THIS KIND OF RWY SETUP.) IF YOU ARE LOOKING AT THE CHART AND PICTURE US ROLLING TO THE END OF THE RWY; WHICH WE WERE DOING; YOU WILL SEE THE 'HOT SPOT' AT THE END OF RWY 34 DUE TO THE HOLD SHORT LINE FOR RWY 20; WHICH IS ACROSS THE RWY MARKINGS FOR RWY 16. I WANTED TO KEEP MY EYES OUTSIDE THE COCKPIT TO HELP THE CAPT WITH WHAT I SAW AS A CONFUSING SIT. I SAW A RED RWY 20 SIGN TO THE L SIDE OF THE RWY; BUT NO OTHER SIGNAGE (I MUST HAVE MISSED WHATEVER ELSE THEY HAD). I GLANCED INSIDE THE COCKPIT TO GLANCE AT THE RWY CHART AND WHEN WE LOOKED OUTSIDE I SAW YELLOW LINES FOR WHAT I THOUGHT WERE ARRESTING GEAR WIRES. THE CAPT LATER TOLD ME THAT THIS MUST HAVE BEEN THE HOLD SHORT LINE. TWR SAID NOTHING TO US AND AFTER THE DEPARTING ACFT TOOK OFF WE WERE CLRED TO CROSS RWY 20 AND TAXI IN TO THE GATE. FOR MY PART; I OBVIOUSLY SHOULD HAVE NOTICED THE RWY CHART WHICH HAD THE HOLD SHORT INFO ON IT. THIS WAS A NEW AND FRUSTRATING EXPERIENCE FOR ME AND I HOPE AND PRAY THAT I AM BETTER FOR IT.
