Narrative
DURING CLBOUT THROUGH 12000 FT AFTER DEPARTING ZZZ; THE 'L ENG OVERHEAT' EICAS MESSAGE CAME ON. I RETARDED THE L ENG THROTTLE SUFFICIENTLY TO EXTINGUISH THE MESSAGE AND OVERHEAT LIGHT. WE CONTINUED THE CLB AT REDUCED PWR AND CONTINUED ON COURSE WHILE ACCOMPLISHING THE ENG OVERHEAT QRH PROC. WE NOTICED THAT WHEN THE L THROTTLE WAS RETARDED; A STATUS MESSAGE; 'L ENG FIRE LOOP #1' CAME ON. WHEN I ADVANCED THE L THROTTLE TOWARD CLB PWR; WHEN THE OVERHEAT INDICATIONS REAPPEARED; THE STATUS MESSAGE CLRED FROM VIEW. PULLING THE THROTTLE BACK EXTINGUISHED THE OVERHEAT INDICATIONS AND BROUGHT THE STATUS MESSAGE BACK ON. WE RAN THE QRH FOR 'FIRE/OVERHEAT SYS;' BUT IT DIDN'T ACCOMPLISH ANYTHING SINCE THE 'SYS FAIL' LIGHT WAS NOT ILLUMINATED. PASSING THROUGH FL220; I DECLARED AN EMER WITH ZZZ ARTCC AND COORD A RETURN TO ZZZ. I LEFT BOTH ENGS RUNNING DURING THE RETURN TO ZZZ. THE RETURN WAS EXPEDITIOUS AND UNEVENTFUL. THE CFR CREWS MET THE AIRPLANE AFTER LNDG FOR AN EXTERNAL INSPECTION; AND RPTED NO FIRE OR OBVIOUS PROBS. AFTER LNDG; WE SHUT DOWN THE L ENG. THE LNDG WAS OVERWT AT 207500 LBS.
