ZLA RADAR ASSOCIATE DESCRIBED OPERROR DURING TRAINING SESSION AS INSTRUCTOR CTLR ISSUED CLB CLRNC RESULTING IN THE LOSS OF SEPARATION.
Narrative
WORKING THE RADAR ASSOCIATE POS; I WAS SEQUENCING FLT STRIPS; MAKING AND TAKING HDOFS AND ANSWERING ALL THE SECTOR LANDLINE CALLS. AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT; I WAS CONTEMPLATING TAKING A HDOF INBOUND FOR OUR SECTOR FROM THE NE AT FL300; WBOUND. THE RADAR CTLR HAD 2 ACFT NBOUND; ONE AT FL310 AND ANOTHER AT FL280; REQUESTING HIGHER. TRAINING IN PROGRESS AT THE RADAR POS AND THE TRAINEE AND I DISCUSSED LEAVING THE FL280 ACFT THERE. THE TRAINER FELT THERE WAS TIME AND AN ADVANTAGE TO CLBING THE FL280 ACFT HIGHER AND ASKED THE ACFT TO CLB TO FL300 AT A FAST RATE. THE ACFT MISUNDERSTOOD THE CLRNC AND THE TRAINER CLBED THE ACFT TO FL330 (BY MISTAKE MEANING TO RESTATE FL300) IN CONFLICT WITH THE OTHER ACFT NBOUND AT FL310 AND TO HIS L. I ONLY HEARD THE FIRST CLRNC TO FL300; AS IT WAS ALSO ENTERED INTO THE ACFT DATA BLOCK AS SUCH. I THEN CALLED THE SECTOR HANDING OFF THE ACFT AT FL300 WBOUND; AND REQUESTED CTL FOR DSCNT. THE FIRST TIME WE NOTICED THERE WAS A PROB WAS WHEN CONFLICT ALERT ACTIVATED AND THE ACFT ASSIGNED FL330 WAS LEAVING FL300 IN CONFLICT WITH THE OTHER ACFT AT FL310. THE RADAR CTLR IMMEDIATELY ISSUED A TFC ALERT AND CLBED THE ACFT AT FL310 TO FL320.
