Synopsis

AN A320 IN CRUISE AT FL360 DECLARED AN EMER AND DIVERTED DUE TO AFT AVIONICS COMPARTMENT RED SMOKE LIGHT AND AURAL WARNING.

Narrative

WHILE OPERATING FLT FROM ZZZ1 TO ZZZ2 AT FL350; WE RECEIVED AN 'AFT AVIONICS COMPARTMENT' WARNING; RED LIGHT SMOKE INDICATION; FOLLOWED BY A CONTINUOUS HORN ON THE OVERHEAD PANEL. THIS DID NOT HAVE ASSOCIATED ECAM ACTION. I SILENCED THE ALARM AND ASKED THE FO FOR THE QRH PROC. AFTER HE ACCOMPLISHED THE QRH; THE RED LIGHT WARNING STAYED ON AND WE RECEIVED A SECOND ALARM WARNING. AT THAT TIME; I DECLARED AN EMER AND ATC VECTORED ME TO ZZZ. DURING THE DSCNT; I ASKED THE FO TO GO TO THE POS MANUAL TO REVIEW AND GET AS MUCH INFO AS POSSIBLE; TIME PERMITTING; UNTIL FINAL VECTORS FOR LNDG WERE PROVIDED. I INFORMED THE CABIN CREW OF THE PLAN AND NOTIFIED THE PAX. THIS WAS FOLLOWED BY THE OVERWT LNDG PROC FROM QRH. I BRIEFED THE APCH AND RAN ALL THE CHKLISTS AND ACCOMPLISHED THE OVERWT LNDG AT RWY 17R. UPON LNDG; WE RECEIVED A THIRD SMOKE WARNING AND ALARM; AT WHICH POINT I STOPPED AT THE RWY AND REQUESTED A VISUAL INSPECTION FROM THE EMER PERSONNEL. THE VISUAL INSPECTION; INCLUDING 'CFR' INSPECTION; WAS COMPLETED AND THEY TOLD US THAT THERE WAS NO VISUAL SMOKE OR FIRE PRESENT. AFTER THE EMER PERSONNEL CLRED US; WE TAXIED TO THE PARKING AREA OF THE EMER SVCS FOLLOWED BY ONE OF THE EMER TRUCKS. THE EMER SVCS PERSONNEL COMPLETED ALL THE REQUIRED INSPECTIONS WITH THE EMER PERSONNEL. DURING THIS TIME; WE MAINTAINED CONSTANT PHONE CONTACT WITH MAINT AND DISPATCH IN ZZZ1 AND WITH COORD OF THE EMER SVCS PERSONNEL THEY APPROVED TO CLR THE AVIONICS SMOKE MALFUNCTION AND OVERWT LNDG. THEY ALSO PERFORMED ALL THE NECESSARY MEL'S. AT THAT TIME WE WERE REFUELED AND RECEIVED A NEW FLT PLAN AND RELEASE AND DEPARTED FOR ZZZ2 WITHOUT FURTHER PROBS.
