AN A320 EXPERIENCED A PARKING BRAKE MALFUNCTION AND ROLLED AFTER PARKING AT THE GATE IN SMF; CONTACTING THE JETWAY WITH #1 ENG AND INJURING A PAX.
Narrative
AFTER AN UNEVENTFUL FLT AND LNDG; WE TAXIED FROM RWY 16R TO GATE IN SMF. THE MARSHALLER GUIDED US IN TO A STOP. I SET THE PARKING BRAKE AND CHKED THE TRIPLE GAUGE FOR BRAKE PRESSURE; WHICH WAS NORMAL. I THEN TOLD THE FO TO SHUT DOWN THE #2 ENG. I RELEASED THE SEATBELT SIGN SWITCH AND THEN PROCEEDED TO PUT MY CHARTS AWAY IN MY FLT BAG. AT THAT POINT; I NOTICED FROM THE CORNER OF MY EYE THAT THE JETWAY APPEARED TO MOVE A GREATER-THAN-NORMAL DISTANCE. I REALIZED IMMEDIATELY THAT IT WAS NOT THE JETWAY BUT THE ACFT. AT THAT PRECISE TIME; A RAMP PERSON STARTED BANGING ON THE SIDE OF THE ACFT. I IMMEDIATELY PUSHED ON THE BRAKE PEDALS WHICH BROUGHT THE AIRPLANE TO AN ABRUPT STOP. I LOOKED AT THE BRAKE PRESSURE GAUGE AND NOTICED THAT WITH THE PEDALS DEPRESSED; BRAKE PRESSURE WAS INDICATING. I ALSO SAW THE BRAKE ACCUMULATOR GO FROM GREEN-BAND TOWARDS ZERO AND THEN BACK UP. I RESET THE PARKING BRAKE HANDLE AND NOTICED THAT WE HAD ZERO PRESSURE INDICATING. I TOLD MY FO TO PULL OUT THE FLT MANUAL TO SEE IF THERE WAS A PROC WHILE I WAS HOLDING THE BRAKE PEDALS. AT THAT TIME WE ALSO STARTED THE APU SO THAT WE COULD SHUT DOWN THE #1 ENG. ONCE THE APU WAS ON-LINE AND THE #1 ENG WAS SHUT DOWN; I INFORMED RAMP TO CHOCK THE WHEELS. THIS WAS ACCOMPLISHED STRAIGHT-AWAY. I ALSO ASKED IF THEY COULD SEE ANY KIND OF DAMAGE OUTSIDE AS WELL AS THE CONDITION OF PERSONNEL AROUND THE ACFT; TO WHICH THEY RESPONDED THAT WE APPARENTLY MADE CONTACT WITH THE #1 ENG AND THE JETWAY. I THEN SPOKE TO THE PURSER TO SEE IF ANYONE ON BOARD WAS INJURED. SHE TOLD ME THAT TO HER KNOWLEDGE; NO ONE SEEMED INJURED; JUST STUNNED WITH THE ABRUPT STOP. I MADE A PA TO THE PAX TO INFORM THEM THAT WE HAD A BRAKE MALFUNCTION AND THAT THE ACFT WAS SECURE FOR DEPLANING. ONCE OUR PARKING CHKLIST WAS COMPLETED; I CALLED MAINT AND TOLD HIM WHAT HAPPENED. AFTER THAT I SPOKE TO THE PURSER AGAIN WHO WAS SPEAKING WITH A MIDDLE-AGED WOMAN IN THE GALLEY OF FIRST CLASS WHO APPARENTLY RECEIVED SOME INJURIES DURING THE ABRUPT STOP. SHE TOLD ME THAT SHE HAD A PRE-EXISTING BACK INJURY AND THAT SHE NEEDED MEDICAL ATTN. I ASKED IF SHE WAS STANDING OR SITTING DURING ALL THIS; AND SHE TOLD ME SHE WAS SEATED WITH HER SEATBELT FASTENED. I SPOKE WITH A CUSTOMER SVC REPRESENTATIVE TO SEE IF WE HAD PARAMEDICS COMING; WHICH DID HAPPEN. AS WE FINALLY DEPLANED THE ACFT; SHE WAS BEING TREATED IN THE BOARDING AREA. SHE SEEMED MORE INJURED IN THE BOARDING AREA THAN SHE DID WHEN I WAS TALKING TO HER IN THE AIRPLANE GALLEY WITH THE PURSER. I THEN MADE A PHONE CALL TO THE DUTY MGR FOR FURTHER FOLLOW-UP.
