Narrative
FLT WAS UNEVENTFUL UNTIL APPROX 70 MI E OF ZZZ. DURING DSCNT THROUGH APPROX 12000 FT; THE FO SAID HE SMELLED AN ELECTRICAL BURNING SMELL. I AGREED. WE THEN PROCEEDED TO COMPLETE THE IMMEDIATE ACTION QRC ITEMS FOR SMOKE IN CABIN/COCKPIT AND DON OUR OXYGEN MASKS AND ESTABLISH CREW COMS. DURING THIS TIME; HAZE BEGAN FORMING IN THE COCKPIT. I DELEGATED THE FO TO FLY AND TALK WITH ATC WHILE I COMPLETED THE QRC. I THEN CALLED THE CABIN AND ASKED IF THEY SMELLED ANYTHING BURNING. OUR PURSER CONFIRMED THE PRESENCE OF NOXIOUS FUMES. I TOLD HER I WOULD GET RIGHT BACK WITH HER. THE FO DECLARED AN EMER WITH ATC. THE FO AND I COLLECTIVELY MADE THE DECISION TO PROCEED DIRECT ZZZ. AT OUR PRESENT POS AND TIME; ZZZ WAS THE NEAREST SUITABLE FIELD. ONCE OUR CHKLISTS WERE COMPLETED; AND WE WERE HEADED DIRECTLY TO ZZZ; I COORD WITH THE FLT ATTENDANTS AND GAVE THEM THE NATURE; TIME; AND PREPARATION FOR EVAC INSTRUCTIONS PERTAINING TO OUR EMER. OUR PURSER INSTRUCTED US THAT THE FLT ATTENDANTS WERE FEELING DIZZY; AND WERE USING THE PORTABLE OXYGEN BOTTLES TO PREPARE THE CABIN FOR EVAC. NOTING THE DIZZINESS; I DEPLOYED THE PAX OXYGEN MASKS MANUALLY FROM THE COCKPIT. I SENT AN ACARS MESSAGE TO DISPATCH '7700 SMOKE IN COCKPIT' AND SQUAWKED 7700. WITH THE FEW REMAINING MINS AFTER ALL THE COORD; THE FO AND I WORKED TOGETHER AND ENSURED WE HAD DONE EVERYTHING WE COULD TO LAND SAFELY; AND REVIEWED OUR ACTIONS TO BE COMPLETED ONCE WE HAD LANDED. THE FO LANDED. I MADE A PA ANNOUNCEMENT TO REMAIN IN YOUR SEATS TO AVOID EVAC WITH ENGS RUNNING AND THE ACFT MOVING. I TOOK CTL OF THE ACFT AT APPROX 60 KTS. I BROUGHT THE ACFT TO A STOP ON TXWY. I SET THE PARKING BRAKE AND OPENED MY SLIDING WINDOW. THE FO COMPLETED THE QRC FOR EVAC WHILE I BACKED HIM UP THROUGH THE STEPS. WE THEN INITIATED THE EVAC. PRIOR TO LEAVING THE ACFT; THE PURSER CHKED WITH US TO MAKE SURE WE WERE ALRIGHT; AND THEN SHE EVACED. I THEN DELEGATED THE FO TO TAKE OVERALL COMMAND OF THE PAX OUTSIDE THE ACFT. WHEN THE FO AND I EXITED THE COCKPIT; ALL THE PAX AND FLT ATTENDANTS WERE EVACED. THE FO EVACED; AND PROCEEDED TO CARRY OUT MY INSTRUCTIONS. I THEN PROCEEDED TO CHK EACH SEAT FOR ANY PAX AND EVENTUALLY EVACED AT 2L. WHEN I REACHED THE PAX; THE FO HAD ALL THE PAX SAFELY AWAY FROM THE ACFT AND GND EQUIP. THEY WERE HUDDLED TOGETHER ON THE GRASS. I RESUMED CTL OF THE PAX; AND MADE AN ANNOUNCEMENT EXPLAINING WHAT HAD HAPPENED AND ENSURED THAT THERE WERE NO INJURIES. THE FO AND I THEN COORD WITH GND PERSONNEL TO TAKE OUR PAX TO THE TERMINAL. ONCE IN THE TERMINAL I DEBRIEFED WITH THE FLT ATTENDANTS AND FO. I THEN PROCEEDED TO WHERE THE PAX WERE ASSEMBLED IN THE TERMINAL AND ANSWERED QUESTIONS AND ENSURED THEIR SAFETY.
