Synopsis

A CL65 ENTERING HOLDING EXPERIENCED AN EGPWS WARNING AFTER THE AUTOPLT ENTERED A PITCH MODE FOLLOWING A DISCONTINUED ILS APCH TO CRW RWY 23.

Narrative

I WAS FLYING AN APCH INTO CRW WITH A COUPLED AUTOPLT AND FLT DIRECTOR. ON ILS APCH FOR RWY 23; OUTSIDE MEEKY; APCH CTL ADVISED US RWY 23 RVR AT 2000 FT. WE REQUIRED 2400 FT TO CONTINUE; SO WE ASKED TO HOLD UNTIL RVR CAME UP. APCH CTL INSTRUCTED US TO HOLD OVER MEEKY. WE SET UP THE HOLD; VERIFIED IT; AND EXECUTED IT PROMPTLY. I NOTICED THE ACFT WAS DSNDING; AT THE SAME TIME WE RECEIVED A TERRAIN WARNING FROM THE GPWS. I PROCEEDED TO FLY THE RECOVERY PROC BACK TO HOLDING PATTERN ALT. WE RPTED THE WARNING AND CLB TO APCH CTL; WHO IN TURN ADVISED US OF OUR ALTDEV. WE RE-ENTERED THE HOLD AND STAYED THERE UNTIL RVR ALLOWED US TO SHOOT THE APCH AND LAND. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR STATED THAT THE ACFT HAD ENTERED THE APCH MODE AND WAS TRACKING THE ILS GS AND COURSE WHEN THE APCH WAS ABANDONED BECAUSE OF WX MINIMUMS. AFTER THE APCH WAS DISCONTINUED AND WHILE THE FMS BEING PROGRAMMED FOR THE HOLDING; THE ACFT TRANSITIONED FROM GS TRACK TO A PITCH MODE. THE RPTR IS NOT SURE WHICH PITCH MODE WAS REVERTED TO; BUT WHEN THE EGPWS ANNUNCIATED; THE DSCNT WAS STOPPED.
