B757 FLT CREW HAS SMOKE/FUMES AFTER TKOF; DIVERTS FOR LNDG.
Narrative
ON ARRIVAL AT COCKPIT PERFORMED NORMAL PREFLIGHT DUTIES; WHICH INCLUDED STARTING THE APU. THIS AIRCRAFT HAD A DEFERRED APU; HOWEVER; THE DEFERRAL WAS NOT PRESENT IN THE PAPERWORK IN FLIGHT OPERATIONS. THE DEFERRAL STICKER WAS PRESENT ADJACENT TO THE APU SWITCH; BUT WAS QUITE DIFFICULT TO DISCERN IF STANDING WHILE ACTIVATING THE SWITCH; EVEN THOUGH ONE HAS A CLEAR VIEW OF THE SWITCH. AFTER RUNNING THE APU FOR 1 MINUTE; THE RIGHT PACK WAS TURNED ON; AND SHORTLY AFTERWARD SOME SMOKE WAS INTRODUCED INTO THE CABIN. WE TURNED OFF THE RIGHT PACK; AND THE APU AND HAD THE CREW GET OFF THE AIRCRAFT. OPS WAS CALLED; AND THEY CONTACTED MAINTENANCE. FIRE DEPARTMENT EVENTUALLY SHOWED UP AND INSPECTED THE AIRCRAFT. MAINTENANCE RAN BOTH ENGINES AND BOTH PACKS; AND IT WAS DETERMINED THAT ALL SMOKE WAS EVACUATED; AND NO FURTHER MAINTENANCE WAS REQUIRED; AND READY FOR RELEASE. NORMAL TAXI AND TAKEOFF; WITH ONLY A SMALL RESIDUAL SMELL IN THE COCKPIT; AND ON CLIMB OUT I CALLED THE FLIGHT ATTENDANTS WHO REPORTED SOME ODOR COMING THROUGH THE AIR-CONDITIONING; AND SMALL AMOUNT OF SMOKE. PERFORMED ALL APPROPRIATE CHECKLISTS. NOTED THAT THERE WAS NEVER ANY CONCENTRATION OF SMOKE. AFTER FOLLOWING CHECKLISTS; NO IMPROVEMENT IN SMOKE OR ODOR; AND RETURNED TO AIRPORT.
