B757 FLT CREW HAS A HIGH SPD REJECTED TKOF ATL.
Narrative
WE WERE TAXIING TO RWY 27R FOR TKOF WHEN GND CTL TOLD US THEY WERE TURNING THE ARPT AROUND. THEY INSTRUCTED US TO TAXI TO RWY 9L. WE REQUESTED NEW CLRNC VIA ACARS FOR RWY 9L. WE UPDATED THE BOX WITH THE NEW RWY; DEP; AND AIRSPDS FOR RWY 9L. EVENTUALLY WE WERE CLRED FOR TKOF. WE WERE THE FIRST PLANE TO TAKE OFF ON RWY 9L. THE TKOF WAS NORMAL UNTIL TWR SAID 'ACR X CANCEL TKOF CLRNC.' WE WERE CLOSE TO V1 BUT I HADN'T HEARD V1 CALLED SO I INITIATED THE ABORT. IT WAS MY LEG SO I RETARDED THE THROTTLES TO IDLE AND LET THE RTO SYS OPERATE. I WAS LOOKING DOWN THE RWY MAKING SURE I HAD A CLR PATH AND MAINTAINING DIRECTIONAL CTL. THE FO MADE A PA TO KEEP THE PAX IN THEIR SEATS AND TO ENSURE THEY STAYED CALM. I LET THE RTO SYS SLOW THE PLANE UNTIL I WAS SURE WE HAD PLENTY OF RWY LEFT THEN I DISENGAGED THE RTO SYS TO ALLOW THE PLANE TO SLOW AT A MORE NORMAL RATE. I LET THE PLANE ROLL TO THE END AND EXITED THE RWY AND STOPPED ON THE TXWY. WE TOLD TWR WE WOULD SIT ON THE TXWY TO MONITOR OUR BRAKES. I MADE ANOTHER PA WHILE THE FO COMPLETED THE CHKLIST AND BEGAN REFING THE BRAKE ENERGY DATA. I COULDN'T TALK TO ATL RADIO (ALTHOUGH I LATER FOUND OUT THEY COULD HEAR US WE JUST COULDN'T HEAR THEM); SO I CALLED MAINT DIRECTLY. I TOLD THEM WHAT HAPPENED AND THAT WE WERE ANTICIPATING HOT BRAKES. MAINT SAID THEY WOULD GET US A GATE BECAUSE THEY WOULD PROBABLY HAVE TO CHANGE SOME TIRES. I SAID I WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO GET TO A GATE IF THE BRAKES OVERHEATED. THE FIRE DEPT HAD BEEN CALLED AND ABOUT THAT TIME TWR TOLD US THEY SAW SOME SMOKE COMING FROM OUR R WHEELS BUT IT SEEMED TO BE DISSIPATING. I IMMEDIATELY CALLED MAINT AND TOLD THEM WE WERE THROUGH. THEY WERE GOING TO HAVE COME GET THE PLANE. ABOUT THAT TIME TWR SAID IT LOOKED LIKE WE HAD LOST A TIRE AND THE FIRE CHIEF CONFIRMED WE HAD LOST TWO. HE SAID NO INDICATION OF FIRE SO HE CLRED THE MAJORITY OF THE RESPONSE VEHICLES OFF. ABOUT THIS TIME MAINT ARRIVED AND TOOK THE PLANE.
