Narrative
THE CAPT AND I MET IN THE LOBBY OF HOTEL IN JFK AT XA50; INTRODUCED OURSELVES; AND BOTH OF US COMMENTED ON HOW NEITHER OF US SLEPT VERY WELL. IT WAS THE CAPT'S LEG AND DURING THE TKOF BRIEF HE DESCRIBED THE KENNEDY ONE DEP; CANARSIE CLB. HE WAS IN GREEN DATA AND HAD R176 SET FOR THE COURSE. HE HAD ALSO PROGRAMMED THE FMS WITH CRI AS A FIX WITH THE R039. I WAS IN WHITE DATA. THE TKOF WAS NORMAL; AT 400 FT HE BEGAN HIS TURN TOWARD CRI. TWR SWITCHED US TO DEP. I CHKED IN AND WE WERE GIVEN 7000 FT. THE CAPT CALLED FOR THE CLB CHK; WHICH I DID. PRIOR TO VERIFYING THE CHKLIST I TOOK A MOMENT TO CHK THE INSTRUMENT AND GET SITUATIONALLY AWARE. THE CAPT'S COURSE WAS SET TO R223 TO CRI. I NEVER SAW HIM CTR THE COURSE. I PAUSED FOR A SECOND; LOOKED AT THE COURSE (WE WERE E OF R039 WHICH I VERIFIED WITH THE FMS). LOOKING AT MY FMS ON THE 10 NM RING I NOTICED THAT CRI WAS VERY CLOSE. AS I CHANGED THE RANGE TO 2.5 NM; I ASKED; '176 DEG RADIAL IS OUTBOUND COURSE RIGHT?' HE SAID; 'YES; THAT'S THE OUTBOUND COURSE.' AS HE TURNED THE COURSE TO R176; THE AIRPLANE IMMEDIATELY STARTING TURNING L. WE WERE THROUGH ABOUT A 200 DEG HDG WHEN ATC ASKED IF WE WERE ASSIGNED CANARSIE CLB; WHICH I CONFIRMED. HE THEN STATED; 'I'M SHOWING YOU 3 NM S OF COURSE.' I SAID; 'WE WERE IN THE TURN.' HE THEN ASSIGNED US A HDG OF 120 DEGS. NOTHING ELSE WAS SAID. WE WERE THEN CLRED DIRECT WAVEY THEN ON COURSE. POSSIBLE FACTOR: CAPT NOT SETTING 176 DEG COURSE SOON ENOUGH; ME NOT DELAYING CLB CHK DURING BUSY DEP PROC. PROPER MONITORING DURING THE DEP ON MY PART WOULD HAVE MORE THAN LIKELY PREVENTED THE DEV.
