A B757-200 EXPERIENCED COMPRESSOR STALLS ON TKOF AND RETURNED TO LNDG WITHOUT DECLARING AN EMERGENCY AND WITH THE ENG RUNNING.
Narrative
DURING THE PERFORMANCE BRIEFING I ASKED THE FO TO COMPUTE NUMBERS FOR A MAX PWR TKOF FROM RWY 31L DUE TO STRONG WIND AND WINDSHEAR. THE WIND WAS STRONG BUT DIRECTLY DOWN THE RWY. PWR INDICATIONS WERE NORMAL DURING THE TKOF ROLL. IMMEDIATELY AFTER ROTATION A BANG WAS HEARD. MY IMMEDIATE THOUGHT WAS THAT WE MAY HAD BLOWN A TIRE AND STATED SUCH TO THE FO. I STATED THAT I WOULD LIKE TO LEAVE THE GEAR DOWN WHILE WE REVIEWED OUR PROB. TWR THEN INSTRUCTED US TO CONTACT DEP CTL AND AT ABOUT THE SAME TIME ANOTHER BANG WAS HEARD AND I NOTICED A FLUCTUATION IN ENG INDICATIONS. TWR THEN STATED THAT THEY HAD SEEN FLAMES COMING FROM OUR R ENG AND TO STAY WITH THEM. WE THEN CONCLUDED THAT WE HAD AN ENG SURGE/STALL AND I COMMANDED TO FO TO BEGIN THE QRC PROCS. AT THE SAME TIME I REDUCED PWR ON THE R ENG AND THE SURGE/STALL IMMEDIATELY STOPPED. TWR ASKED FOR OUR INTENTIONS AND WE INDICATED THAT WE WOULD RETURN FOR LNDG. TWR CLRED US FOR A VFR DOWNWIND TO LAND ON RWY 31L. WE COMPLETED THE NECESSARY CHKLISTS AND DISCUSSED THE OVERWT LNDG. SINCE RWY; WX; OR ACFT CONDITION WERE NOT A PROB WE ELECTED TO LAND RATHER THAN DELAY IN ORDER TO REDUCE WT. WE DID NOT SHUT DOWN THE ENG IN FLT NOR DECLARE AN EMER. WE MADE A NORMAL FLAPS 25 DEG LNDG AND EXITED THE RWY. IMMEDIATELY UPON EXITING THE RWY WE SHUT DOWN THE R ENG AND EMER PERSONNEL DID A FIRE AND DAMAGE INSPECTION -- NONE WAS NOTED. A MECH WAS DRIVEN TO THE ACFT AND ATTEMPTED TO CHK FOR DAMAGE BUT WAS UNABLE DUE TO THE HIGH ENG MOTORING DUE TO THE WIND. WE TAXIED TO GATE X USING THE L ENG WITHOUT INCIDENT.
