AN A320 FLT CREW EXPERIENCED AN ENGINE FAILURE ON CLIMBOUT. THEY DECLARED AN EMER AND RETURNED TO DEPT ARPT.

Narrative

ON CLBOUT THROUGH 17000 FT HEARD A LOUD BANG ACCOMPANYING THE SENSE THAT WE HAD JUST HIT OR INGESTED SOMETHING ON THE R SIDE OF ACFT. NO COCKPIT WARNINGS OR ALERTS PRIOR TO EVENT. NOTICED THAT ENG #2 EGT WAS NOW +700 DEG CLBING (NO FIRE INDICATIONS). I (CAPT) WAS PF; I LEVELED OFF ACFT WITH AUTOPLT #1 AND TOOK RADIOS. DECLARED EMER; FO ACCOMPLISHED ECAM ACTION WHICH INVOLVED SHUTTING DOWN #2. AFTER MASTER SWITCH WAS SELECTED OFF NO DECREASE IN TEMP. RELEASED FIRE HANDLE. NO FIRE INDICATION ON PANEL. COUNTDOWN COMMENCED FOR BOTTLE AFTER COMPLETION; STILL NO INDICATION ON PANEL; RECEIVED CALL FROM BACK THAT WE WERE STILL ON FIRE. FIRED FIRST BOTTLE AS PRECAUTION. CONTACTED CREW; THERE WAS NO MORE FIRE. EXPLAINED WE LOST R ENG WOULD BE RETURNING TO ZZZ IN 6-10 MINS. CONTACTED COMPANY AFTER COMPLETING ECAM. BEGAN A DSNDING L TURN BACK TO ZZZ; WAS CLRED FOR ILS/VISUAL APCH. WAS STILL A LITTLE HIGH FOR STRAIGHT IN; DID 1 L TURN TO REDUCE ALT. PERFORMED A FLAPS 3 DEGS OVERWT LNDG. WT AT TOUCHDOWN WAS APPROX 150. APCH SPD WAS 152 KTS. 'VS' AT TOUCHDOWN WAS ZERO; VERY SMOOTH. PULLED OFF RWY. MADE ANNOUNCEMENT THAT EQUIP WOULD BE AROUND ACFT. WAS INSPECTED; NO FIRE PRESENT OR DAMAGE NECESSITATING EVAC. PROCEEDED TO GATE WITH EQUIP FOLLOWING. NORMAL SHUTDOWN OF ENG #1 AT GATE.
